Just as an update, I dragged the edge on a glass to dull it then set the bevel on my coti instead of my 1k and went up through a 1 stone, had a much better shave today but still not as nice as I would have liked. Will just have to keep practicing, if spending too much time on a 1k will that leave a wire edge later on in the progression?

I have a similar issues with a J Gibbins & Sons & a Joseph Rodgers Microtome
I have tried the following finishing options before heading to the strop
Nani 12k to stopping
back to Nani 1k through to Nani 12k thinking bad bevel
Nani 12k 10-20 strokes to Pike Swaty Barbers hone (I am hoping is around 12-16k)
Nani 12k 10 strokes to Pike strop/hone Barbers hone (I am hoping is around 12-16k)
Nani 12k 10 stokes to 0.3 Chrox to .01 Ferox on balsa
Nani 12k 10 strokes to Pike strop/hone 10 stokes to 0.3 Chrox on balsa 10-15 stokes to .01 Ferox on balsa 10-15 stokes
all stopping is between 50-80 on clean Felt followed by at least 100 laps od leather (Bridle &/or Roo)
I have settled with the full range for the Gibbins but that Microtome is still harsh feeling
Saved,
to shave another day.

It could always be the razor right. I didn't think of that but I was achieving smooth shaves before that, I modified the GD because it was like 80% of them sh*t right out of the box. Then got a smooth shave then harsh after using the 1k bevel set. Do you think going to the 1k always isn't a good idea?
P.S. that's hard core substance, a lot of different things to finish an edge. I usually settle for right off the coticule and sometimes use cr0x. Does one notice the difference using that many finishers or after a point can you just not tell?

i had the same problem, turns out i was rounding the edge on a chrome ox hanging strop. the jewellers loupe helps a lot in creating a shave edge.

#1 on the jewelers loupe. I was a complete failure at honing until I got one. Now I know exactly when the bevel is set, and I can move up from the 1K with confidence. Best $30 I've ever spent.
