Sorry to go on about these beams of light along the edge but im a bit befuddled .
Does anyone know whats the deal with them.
I know that a honed blade with a beam of light along the edge is a perfect edge.
I just honed this blade and I have a beam of light on the left side but not on the right, so I just re finished it again but it made no difference.

I would not put a lot of thought into "a beam of light" running the edge of the razor,,, that is a reflection of light that you see, not a beam.
I'm not trying to be a smart a$$, just that reflections are being made here. Reflections can sometimes tell you that you have honed the distance from toe to heal & sometimes they can tell you if you have laid a bevel on top of another bevel,,, but they cannot indicate a perfect edge. Too much reflection can hide microchips in the edge though. :shrug:

Usually when I hone I look for the least amount of light reflecting on the edge. Usually if I see a thin line of light it means that the bevel doesn't go all the way to the edge, but light stropping or even dust on the edge can cause light to show. Even the angle can make an edge look completely different, but these least amount of reflecting light the better for me. Once I dialed in on my own person tests I stick with those since I used to get overly obsessed with looking through a loupe or scope and ended up honing a razor far longer than was needed. The less time spent looking through a lens and more spent on shaving resulted in alot less grief. As too a perfect edge in my opinion an edge that I can get a comfortable, clean shave with no adverse side effects post shave is a perfect edge.
You would be better off looking at your edge through a loupe and judging by that. You may even be able to see why it's reflecting that way on 1 side and not the other. Could be the edge is rolled a little or just the angle the light is coming from.

Are you saying that the entire part of the blade that is visible in the photo is all bevel?
If that is the case, then the upper one with the beam of light certainly is not "a perfect edge." The angle of the bevel should be uniform all the way to the edge. For that reason the reflection of light from the bevel should also be uniform. The only way this would not be the case would be if a secondary microbevel had been created.

I think I'm going to walk away from this one. Light reflection is based upon geometry and unless that is a microbevel, it does not make any sense to me.

The only thing I took away from that video was that the man is really enthusiastic about his edges & his new microscope.
Members here have been chasing the edge with microsciopes for a long time, I actually like looking at a well established thread on the use of scopes like this one here:

My friend , you are not seeing a "beam of light", neither is the guy in the video,,, I don't have to be a scientist to know that,,,, you are seeing a "reflection" ,,,,,big difference,,, depending on how you hold the razor & cause the reflection makes all the difference in the photographs.
As I stated earlier, reflections are useful, when observed under a loop, to give you an indication on the width of the bevel from toe to heel & for spotting "micro bevels" established by different grit level hones.

It does signify a true edge , I say that because I just did the tree top arm hair test and it is sickening , every hair falls effortlessly in half..

I'm not saying Dr.Matt is amazing or anything , I'm just saying he is the only person I've found that refers to this beam of light and he says its a super refined edge.
I agree with him. Maybe you need the microscopes we both have to see this light?
Maybe that Beam of Light you keep seeing, is coming from above; it is Easter you know,,,,:shrug:
The "beam of light" created from a strop is different than the light you will see when honing. If the edge reflects light when honing signifies that the bevel and edge don't meet to form a V. A slack strop can cause light to reflect on the edge. The doesn't mean you will have a poor shave as long as it isn't really slack and rolls the edge. When stropping you want the spine to deflect the strop and in doing so making it taut against the edge making it lay flat. I don't know if stropping causes the extremely thin metal at the very edge to convex and cause a micro bevel and reflect light or just clean the edge. Either way as long as it shaves beautifully that is all that matters. At high magnifications it can make a extremely comfortable shaving razor look like something you wouldn't want to touch to your face.
