New DOVO ... Now what?

So today I wasn't expecting to get a new razor. I was searching the net and found someone selling their Unused DOVO 6/8 best quality. I had to rub my eyes and look at the price again. He only wanted 40 bucks. For a brand new DOVO!!! $40 CAD no shipping and off I was rocketing down the 407 at 140km/hr. So I got home and have been admiring what a solid snag I got. The guy is actually my hero. The gas money and 407 toll charges aside I think I came out with a rockin' deal. I was sad that I missed the deal on the T.I.'s but not so much any more.

Now to stop my rambling I don't know if anyone honed it after the factory honing so I've got my trusty coticule with me.

Would you guys suggest just doing some strokes with water only to "finish" on my coticule then a few strokes on Cr0x? Then strop it up and test shave it or should it be ready to go.

Id inspect the bevel and if all looks well id do some strokes on Crox and strop it and see how it shaves before Id put it to a stone. If it didnt shave or perform well Id start at square one, bevel set to final polish on the stone then your usual post hone routine.

Nice scoop. Asses the edge with your loupe and then make a decision. You should be able to tell by looking at it if the bevel is set and how well polished the bevel is. You can do it! Then figure out your strategy as to how much you think it needs. Of course the ultimate test is always how does it shave but that should come after you have figured out a base line. Paste and strop or maybe just strop may be all it needs. If in doubt send it out.

That's a terrific catch. If it is a used razor I just might give it a quick disinfect before I used it to shave with. Aside from that you have already gotten good advice on how to proceed with the edge part. Have fun and enjoy it.

I know this is kind of stupid... But I decided to take it down to bevel set and go through finish just on the coticule. Everything turned out great except for the very tip. About 1-2/8 you can see under the loupe isn't a part of the rest of the bevel. I do not want to rolling x because the hone wear is perfectly even and I don't want to destroy it. How can I reach the tip without rolling x? Even 45 degrees has been iffy.

Either way, NOS (don't think so) or a lightly tried factory edge (again doubtful)...I'd try the edge on the first shave attempt just to see.....:shrug:

However, in the second photo the edge looks to be honed excessively at the toe making a more smiling geometry. Not a bad thing at all, but unless the image is distorted I'd say this edge has had some corrected damage, or just some inept honing, etc. etc..

Regardless, I think you made a good purchase :tu ....providing there's nothing hidden.

Try it, and...well, hone it if necessary.

Maybe isn't new but for 40 bucks I can't complain. I am not sure if all of them come with a small smile at the tip. What do you think I should do.

P.S no chips or cracks

personally if it isn't already fully shave ready (by shave testing) & I don't know the source of the honing
I go to full bevel set, it may only take a few strokes and all good but I then know where my base is & I always use tape for my razors anyway

I'll try shaving with it tomorrow and if it's crappy I'll go right down to bevel set and try the 45 degree strokes with a swoop at the end and see if that does the trick

Sounds like a good plan.

You might want to use a marker on the edge to see where your contact is. If you're proficient with the "swoop" then it's probably not necessary.

So just to update this I was doing 45 degree swooping x strokes on my coticule with slurry but will probably have to drop down to the 1k. The very very tip of the razor remain: with black ink on it. I will however wait until I get some help from Mcbladescar! In a couple weeks. My first DOVO shave will have to wait. :( but I know when it happens it will be awesome

I had a new dovo, same one, not professionally honed, and learned to shave on that factory edge, with just stropping alone. Though I was getting pretty good shaves really. Finally after about a year I was starting to think this could probably be a better shave. So about 15 passes on the 8k norton, and the shave was noticeably improved. A few weeks later I bought a loom strop with 0.5 crox on one side. After using that the hair was pretty much just falling off, very little resistance if any. If that helps.
