You will find several tutorials on how to hone either here, on the SRP, or on youtube (where you can actually find some other videos made by senior members)
If you listen carefully to all advices, that should do the trick.
Next is training : buy a few cheap and ugly razors, and try your hand on them. It takes time to master but it's worth it :)
See if you can find a mentor on the site that is near you. One on one instruction is the best.
Search for videos from Lynn Abrams and GSSixgun.
Years ago, my Uncle taught me how to use a Straight Razor and how to Strop it, He also taught me how to Hone it, but I never used the straight razor much after that. And basically forgot how. I can Sharpen and Hone a Hunting Knife or a Pocket Knife, so there should not bee too much difference. Then again having problems with my hands going numb all the time from a injury is two strikes already at honing a straight razor and doing it correctly.
Thanks for the quick replies.
While all sharpening shares a the same base principal, there are also some very large differences. One on one is probably going to net the best results. Being as you are in south California I suggest you should PM 10pups. He also live in that area and hosts small mini meets frequently and will know who in your specific area will be good to talk to. There is also a meet coning up in your general area very quickly.
Not to discourage you but sharpening a knife is different than honing a razor. Personally I think it is better to approach honing a straight razor as a completely new experience from the ground up. I learned the way Aggelos suggests and by following threads here on honing. The suggestion to find a mentor close to you, if possible, is excellent and would have helped me greatly I am sure. Take your time and ask questions here. It is a long road but rewarding in the end. Good luck.

I know that. That's why I am saying I want to learn how to Hone a Straight Razor. There is a lot of difference in the two. There are differences between the two. I am sure not going to try and shave with my Buck 110.or my Buck112. Or a Buck 119BR.

The reason I mentioned that is quite a few new members have confidently mentioned that honing a straight will be easy for them because they have sharpened knives and tools. Not in so may words but between the lines. Oddly quite a few come back and wonder why they were run over by a truck trying to hone a razor. Over confidence can be a killer.

You've gotta swallow your pride and ask someone for help. I was learning how to hone through videos and it was really hit and miss. I finally sought the help of someone with experience and knowing the kind of people on this site some one will come to your aid and give you a hand.
You have one razor , why not just send it out , cheaper , more efficient and you get a great edge every time, don't have a problem with knowing how to do something. Just don't need to know everything, heck ingetbmybrazors honed on the best stones available and they don't cost me anything! , hell I don't make my own bricks when I built the house, or make my own clothes, Some things just aren't needed, hones cost money and the learning curve isn't fast , but if you must invest the time and money to hone a razor , before you even learn how to use , But there is some good people in your area to help. Knives vs. Razors
I was a meat cutter for several years and I will tell you straight out that the difference between 'sharpening a knife' and 'honing' a razor is as different as black and white!!
IT'S A WHOLE DIFFERENT WORLD!!!
Please take your time, go slow! Every Thing about this 'Art' involves Patience!!!
Honing can wait! Get the 'Basics' Down Pat!!! I waited well over a year before I 'attempted' to learn to hone. I 'knew' that it would be a piece of cake since I'd had years of sharpening knives for work and home. Boy was I WRONG!
If you try to learn 'Everything' at once all you will do is set yourself up for failure on most of the ventures. Just ask pinklather/a Mentor/why he chose that 'handle'!!!!! I'll give you a hint; mix red blood with white lather :hmmm:
Yes you won't be shaving off of your pocket knife. But as far as your razor goes; As Bob, Tc and others have said, it's best to wait while you learn this age old art as it has a huge learning curve. I'll second that motion.
Hang in there the time will come and once it does come you will have experienced Pro edges that you will have something to judge your edges by. While I do my own honing and hone for others/I've sent razors to Glen (GSSIXGUN) asking him to hone with my exact same set up and no pasted strops just so I could compare his to mine. It's been a wonderful learning tool.
It's a long strange trip but well worth the journey! :tu
Have patience and you will be rewarded many times over.

I have to agree with your statement 150% Yes I do know how to use a honing stone to sharpen a knife, but there is a 180% difference between doing a knife and a straight razor.
Yes I will pm 10pups, and see what I can learn.

All these guys have great advice BUT, if you com to the meet we will hook your brain up to a computer and download the library data base right into your skull :<0) http://straightrazorpalace.com/get-t...rnia-meet.html
Make a post in the thread so Marty knows your plans and then just show up. Maybe at least 3 or 4 from your neighborhood coming.
This will put more knowledge in your hand than you could ever read about I swear.
Thank you for hosting this. I have a prior commitment in Yuma,AZ.
