Yes, I posted about this one yesterday as it was already in the silly money. Somebody is paying a lot for eschers. How many does one person need?
Well, I hope it's a good hone for the buyer, if they plan on using it. Otherwise, they'll have a white elephant and more wisdom.
They have already bought a number at around $300 and belgian coticules for fairly high prices ($180 for an average sized hone) from a quick look at the history so I guess they collect them. Nobody can use that many eschers. :)
Some nice straight razors as well.
A matter of more money than sense I suppose. Eschers going the same way as tulip bulbs in the 17th century in Holland,
And to think I wass passing Eschers at 220 or so :D
Cheers

That guy is buying these thing for only one reason. In a few years he'll be selling them on Eboy and laughing all the way to the bank.
Um, yeah - and I usually have a positive attitude but in this case I'll suggest another scenario:
in a few years he's no longer with us and his kids sell his stuff off to a flea market and then you or your kids get an Escher for $2 lol
Cheers
Ivo
ps this is sad - sitting at home on a Fri night drinking vodka waiting for the girls to come home...
Gentlemen,
While that is a huge sum of money that buyer is one of us and a good customer of mine as well. He does indeed use these and has been a valuable source of information to me on a variety of stones all based on experience in owning a vast collection of rare types.
We all put a different value on things. I often spend stupid money on certain razors and slide rules for my collection, on the other hand the largest television in my house is a basic 19" from K-Mart and other than my cell phone is the most advanced electronic device I own <g>. Our newest car is a budget model and 12 years old. Different strokes for different folks.
Take care,
Tony
Well, Tony, you've just outed yourself as the best source known to us for answering the question we're all going to be asking: Was it or was it not a yellow-green? Any chance of finding out? I've got my fingers crossed for the guy...
I'm not going to ask him but the photo looked like it was grey to me. Color in photos is a tricky thing though.
For now I guess it's his secret!
Tony
Tony,
Good to hear that he's one of us and a good customer of yours.
My thinking is that he CANNOT possibly use that many. Unless he hones like there's no tomorrow.
I understand the passion for collection - but imo he must have some that are repeating, which aren't critical for either collecting or honing use by him. And I do believe that we do not need higher prices every month.
Cheers
Ivo
I believe you know darned well who set it! LOL! Rats! Foiled again! He's a good customer of mine and a genius at honing with years of informed experience behind him. He has an awesome collection of razors, stones, and other shaving paraphernalia.
Remember, it took two bidders to reach that price. Bidder #2 sets the price, bidder #1 simply pays more than anyone else (bidder #2) thought it was worth.
Tony
I only know one thing lol, it was out of my price range anyway ;)
Hope whomever the lucky bidder was that it serves him well.:D
