So I recently discovered following my coticule with a thuringian then strop with leather only. First question.
Does anyone know the science behind leather only and no linen after a thuri?
Now the real question and it may be odd. Would it make any difference to go coti then strop linen and leather then finish on thuri and strop on leather only?
I would try it and shave test it if I were you.
I have not tried stropping in the middle of my honing progression, never crossed my mind. I go from my finisher to to pasted hanging strop wipe clean then strop on leather.

So, I assume you are touching up shaving razors, not doing ground up bevel setting on the Coticule. If so, just skip the Coticule and go to the Thüringen after the 8 or 12K.
If you are using the Coticule to build an edge, stropping will improve your edge prior to the Thüringen, at least stropping on leather before a finisher works for me.
I strop on linen or canvas on lower grit stones, especially after the 1k and 8K. The 8k is where your edge really becomes straight and starts to polish the edge.
Stropping cleans up the edge, makes less work for the next stone and can prevent chipping, you don’t need much, 5-10 laps.
If you have a fine Thüringen, the better you prepare the edge, the better your final finish will be. The benefit of stropping cannot be overrated, it is a very nondestructive way to polish and re-align the edge, it will keep you shaving for a long time.
Done. Yes I took a hollow and an old wedge. Next water only 30 laps on 3 different coticules each. Kind of a progression then 30 on linen 60 on leather. Then 100 laps on thuringian and 90 on leather. Shave left side hollow righr side wedge. Took two passes with hollow to get the same result as the wedge, but both are had exellent hht. Also touch to arm hair pop. Very smooth close no irritation at all. I was also trying out my new scuttle for the first time. Very nice.Quote:
