DMT EEF 3 Micron - 4K JIS

Guys I ordered a DMT EEF out of curiosity. I have been reading around but again not a lot of users. Doesn't have a big following. Searching for information yielded a bit but not as much as I was expecting. Most of the comments were, it's not 8k, it's way too coarse, the diamonds cut to deeply, no good for razors. The list goes on and on of comments like that but there were some that had good information about letting it get broken in.

I am more curious as to where to put it?

I was thinking bevel set on a 1k water stone > DMT EEF > some sort of finisher

A quick and easy edge and what I like about it is knowing I am going to get a super flat edge prior to heading to the finisher. That being said I haven't used it on much other then a GD I was rubbing on it to break it in. It has seemed to settle down a bit already. I am trying to compile as much information on it as possible in one thread. I know it doesn't have a great reception but I've got it and want to put it to use.

What are some tips and tricks those of you that have it use to get a shaving edge?

For those of you that have abandoned it, why ?

It's what I use almost exclusively at the 3 micron level. Extremely light finishing pressure will make the edge from the EE noticeably sharper.

I finish on a barber hone and often follow that with newspaper. Been doing it this way for 6 years or so. Many seem to prefer 0.5 or finer paste/powder to newspaper.

That my friend is extremely helpful. I really had no reference point on where to start. I will attempt 5-15 laps after the bevel is set on a 1k.

So i did a mod to a GD to mess with honing. I breadknifed until flat, then set a bevel on a DMT XXC. I then went out and put the blade in a vice and removed the shoulder, re shaped the tip and added some artwork along the top. I set the bevel again on a waterstone. Knocked that edge down on some glass and started here.

Set the bevel on the DMT EEF, a couple sets of half strokes followed by some light finishing strokes set me up perfectly to finish on a double sided barber hone. The shave was smooth and close and comfortable but a little rough, no irritation lasting for more then 2 mins, no razor burn, just the feeling of micro peeling was evident.

I could attribute that to spending 5 mins honing it before my shave, and a host of other things but so far I have to say I like the DMT EE. I'm not saying it's better then anything else it's just another option for those of you who like me do not particularly care for traditional water stones. It's quick and easy, you just need something to tone it down following the use of the DMT and I'm sure any high grit stone would work.
