Question on the Norton Flattening Stone

Do I also soak the flattening stone before using on the 4/8? The instructions don't say. :shrug: Thanks

My understanding is yes. I'm pretty sure my instruction sheet indicated that. Either way, I've heard that the stone should be soaked for 10-15 minutes.

Of course, I can't hone very well yet, so my advice comes with a limited warranty! Good luck.

Thanks Mitchell. I also just found a thread answering my question and yes, it appears both stones should be soaked.

I not only soak them but I do my flattening in the kitchen sink under a stream of running warm water. Reason? It washes the swarf away and prevents high spots from accumulating on the flattening stone under the hone. I use warm water because it feels better on my hands. You could use just cold water if you choose. BTW, I use this same procedure when flattening with DMT diamond coarse stones and flatten new hones in less than a minute including chamfering the edges.
