Just a quick touch up on my Hinderer EDC today.
A Norton barber hone is perfect for that.
Sort of feel a bit like an axe man whenever I pull out the Norton tone;)

What you say makes great sense Mike. I will certainly look at my edges to see how I arrived at shave readiness. The one thing that was common to all these was the bevel had been set some time ago. I was looking to get the best out of my natural stones. And of those this Shobu just is my sweet spot. Cheers Bob.
Finally got round to honing the fbu I brought myself for my birthday. Went Chosera 1k, Naniwa ss 3, 5, 8 and 12. Was off the buffer so full bevel set from nothing. Once the bevel was done honed up well. Went well and didn't loose any of the blade width. Just over 7/8 at the heel quickly going to 8/8 and out to 17/16 at the widest.
Shave test today was fantastic and can now see the appeal of these big heavy blades. The nice big smile really got all the spots on my neck and was one of the easiest shaves I have had.

Hi Birnando, good to see you posting once again sir. No doubt the Norton will put a screaming edge on a knife. I use a couple different ones on my knives too. Stay well.

Here's a user-grade Tanifuji Maxfli 100 finished on nice small piece of razor grade kiita to test the stone. It's a keeper, it's harder than it looks and finer than its hardness would suggest.
Still, kiita always seems a rough row to hoe in razor honing, and on thin slurry this one was surprisingly good but not at the same level of in-shave smoothness as some of my favorites. But very close. So I touched up the edge on thin slurry, then added 25-30 light strokes on clear water, et voilá, a super smooth edge.
Cheers, Steve
Ed, nice work. I too love the bigger heavier blades, I've got 3 Hart steel 7/8, 4 TI. 7/8, aFriodur 7/8, a Dorko 17/16, and I have two Brandonisio & bros 7/8. Love em. Of the ten five are finished on the Suehiro 20k and the remainder on either the Shobu or the Ozuku. Love em lots mate.

Trying to get better at honing wedges. Naniwa 1k-12k then coticule. Nice wade butcher wedge without an insane amount of honewear, no tape needed.

Pike/Norton No. 1 Quality Washita
Black Arkansas
Attachment 276509
That is quite a slab of Black Arkansas you have there, Steel. Goodness!
I honed up my new Henckels yesterday, Chosera 1k then Superstones, 2k, 5k and 10k. The 10k is my benchmark hone, every new razor gets tested at this to see what its capable of. I could shave off the 10k forever but wheres the fun in that!?
So today onto a Nakayama Maruichi kamisori Asagi, just been trying water only finishing on this bad boy and I have to say I am very impressed, im going to do 10 more laps on it every night to see if more laps equals better egde. :)

Here was what I did on this grey cold NYC day. Attachment 276589
I pulled out the Pike Reversible Oilstone box which has two lids (one each side) that open to two different stones. A Lily White and an India. I used the Washita and the black Arkansas to hone this long neglected razor.
The edges are simply perfect off these stones. Very happy.

They actually classify them as separate categories of stones but they are both Novaculite. The Washita has a more open structure making it less dense (faster cutting) and the higher quality ones (Norton/Pike) are consistent in the spacing of the pores with Lily White and a few others being the most consistent. I used only these two stones. The black Arkansas is my finisher.
Your grey Translucent is more than likely a finisher and the more “burnished” it is the finer the edge it will leave. There are many threads on burnishing these stones OR you can just let them burnish naturally through use.
I have a small black Arkansas, I think it's about 6 x 2. It's just a pup compared to Steel's beautiful beast up there ^^^. I really enjoy it and have been spending some quality time learning it's secrets over the last few months with some great coaching from Steel. (But lately I have a yellow/green thuringian that's been holding my attention.) One thing I noticed is that after really studying the novaculite stones, practicing a lot, is my sense of pressure improved. And that improvement is definitely transferable to other types of hones.
Last night I got to a W&B Special, this blade had/has a bit of a wonky bevel. I'm ok with it, plus the edge had a slight smile so I left all alone. Honed this with out tape as I normally do. Started with tape and it made a micro bevel which was noticeable, I didn't like it so went bare.
Stones, 2k, 5k, 8k, Kuromaku and 12k Nani SS.

A nice vintage GENCO bevel set on Chosera 1K switch to natural approx 3-4K grit then to vintage coticule.

Progress to a much finer AND much slower, man made vintage coticule with soapy water.

Final finish on vintage Y/G thuri with bark on the backside. Slurry raised w/ Y/G rubber stone. Great little shavers with good steel. Have a nice day!

Just honed up my favourite shaver. W&B Brass Frameback.
The lack of heel makes it awkward to hone but I enjoy awkward .
1k then a full progression with no dilutions.
The edges I get from this little blade are breath taking ..
Cheers guys ..

Testing out new tomo. Wanted to try tomo but harder than my other(other tomo decently soft but very nice finish). This tomo is ozuku and feels a bit softer than my oozuku which I am happy with (didn't want it to be harder). Razor is a Le Grelot with hardly any hone wear, probably getting it rescaled with something nice later on. Looks like tomo might have scratched base stone, so I rounded the corners on it. Will test it some more, I think it is soft enough it shouldn't scratch stone if I am careful with pressure.

JG Parker, this is by far the easiest near wedge I have honed to date. 1k through 8k kuromaku 12k naniwa ss. Took a wonderful edge and can't wait for test shave tomorrow.
American steel and 4/8 Norton tonite. Nice, gentle pyramid.
:D

That went easy! Love the ones in fine condition. :y
Off to the wet wonder. 12k Naniwa...:rofl2:
It's SO exciting around here..

Well, That did not take long. The Wester began to back-up in about 6 strokes.
Went 30 on the Red Dog.
It will likely be a waste of time, but I have never used this Dark Blue Escher since I obtained it from Geezer. Curiously, this slurry stone I swapped Jimmyhad out of (somehow) works great with it.
Is it me, or are thurrys picky about their slurry-stone partners?
We may never know.
Anyway, it seems to me that the dark Blue is not as fine as the Blue-green. I sortof wonder if it improved my 12k or not.
A few strokes did not feel right, flushed all the slurry off.
Still not what I wanted, so I quit.
Perhaps I should flatten it.

Now to go to the stropping subforum! :roflmao
Hey, Hirau!

I see I am slow tonight.
It is SO exciting around here also.
A long way in between.
Maybe we should meet in Kansas City and see where a Dragons Tongue fits into your progression????????????

Noooooooooooo! :dropjaw:
Or we could try this one that I was told is a Hindustan......

Perhaps we could indulge into the Gnomestone?

That should take you to bedtime, Tim!
G'Nite! :chapeau
Not quite but close.
One of mine a NOS Mitsuon 3000 came in from Japan yesterday, as with all NOS that come my way they all must pay a visit to the 8K 12K and finally the 20K, haven't yet come across an edge that doesn't shave better after a visit to the Suehiro Gokumyo 20K.

Lovely Jamie, will this one be a keeper?
New stones. Unknown mine. The awasedo is very hard. Light green with clouding. The tomo has layers of yellow, green and some red.
5/8 Dovo went through 1,3,5 and 8K. Then DN slurry on the finishing stone followed by the tomo slurry. Finished on slurry without diluting. Nice and sharp with very comfy edge.
