YES! That's what I am talking about!

Some good ole U.S.A stuff. A great shaving Electric Razor Co, Newark N.J. touched up on a translucent Arkansas and the exotic Norton stropped on the exotic Red Imp (nos) strop...haha
Very Nice! Those old Electrics are awesome!
So you have stropped on that Red Imp? Ah! It is no longer NOS! :D
What is the old Norton hone like?
I didn't strop on that Red Imp,I have another that I used,my mistake. I was tempted to.The Norton hone makes a keen edge fast and does not seem to sacrifice smooth, from what I remember.I hardly use it,but will now that its handy so I can give a more accurate opinion.

This time I followed the advice/tips about using WD40 on my Dans Transleucent.
The result was an improvement in the edge from using lather.
Dare I say it is almost as good as the edges I am able to achieve with my GOK20.
Still playing with it and enjoying the challenge. Ken
Nice razor AND lovely hone, Ken.
The Arks intrigue me. Are these new ones fairly consistent in the grit department?
Thanks Sharptonn.
I wouldn't say that the Arks' are a specific "grit". It is going to depend on the amount of "burnish" that the face you are using has. I spent a couple of hours rubbing my stone on one side with a 1" chisel. It now has a very glassy quality.
If you hone on that side dry it feels uniformly waxy. And imparts some sound of the stone working. With each type of lubricant the feeling and sound is less.
WD40 Results in what feels like almost nothing is being done. But the results and my face prove that improvement of the edge is being accomplished.
I have left the back of the stone un- burnished. I have used that side to step down to if a razor doesn't respond well to the dry to WD40 progression on the burnished side.
Basically my research about the Arks on here is proving correct. The surface prep of the stone combined with varying pressure and viscosity of lubricants results in what we would describe as going through a progression.
The Dans came flat and ready use both sides.
Hope my explanation makes sense and possibly helps.
Ken.
I am a BIG WD fan. Buy it by the case! :)
Is there a progression of Arks? Seems there are a lot of finishers which can redefine sharp.
I see the black ones too?
Funny, as a synthetic user for the most part, I flush and lap away the black swarf.
Ark guys want to embed it into the hone! Neat! :)
I suppose they don't need lapping very often?
There are softer Arks that are used for lower grit work. I've never had or used them. Someone else will surely come along with insight on those. The surgical blacks also have a rep for being great finishers. Some say better than the Trans stones.
You can use an all Washita/Arkansas progression. You will see many of my posts here on Hone of the Day where I do exactly that with great results. That being said, an all ark progression is a lesson in patience and skill as they can be a “moving target” much like using slurry on a Coticule and trying to dilute it just right. A lot of variables so I recommend starting with a translucent or black or other true hard Arkansas as a finisher first. They are not so hard that way and pretty easy to get amazing results. If you are bored or love challenges then move on to an all Arkansas progression. IMO it is the hardest system to learn but once mastered EVERYTHING ELSE is a piece of cake.
Oh well! Today's victims.
A NOS Kikuboshi was surprisingly dull out of the box. A fine Escher finish for it shall do well.
The old Wolfertz from Allentown, PA will get this old Lauterjung hone after 8k. Just to satisfy my curiosity!

Looks like a fun day for you, Tom. Atta Boy! :p
A pretty razor on a pretty rock

I put the new Hohenzollern stone to work last night and touched up a Rudolf Schmidt Bambola 192 for this mornings shave. The edge was EXCELLENT! Keen and incredibly comfortable. Every bit as good as an Escher. I need to do some more testing with it to see exactly how good it can be, but if this is any indication it will be a great stone.
Ken-I totally get what you are saying: going from one side (the unburnished side) of an ark to your glassy burnished side, and then progressing from dry to WD-40 or a similar lube with varying degrees of pressure is, when you think about it, very much a progression that it would take a couple of other kinds of synthetic or natural stones to handle.
It's kind of like a JNAT with a 3 or 4-nagura progression to a tomo and, maybe (depending on your stone and skills) finishing on plain water. That's a lot of fun, too, but at least in my limited experience, more complicated and time-consuming.
There are many roads to sharp.
I rarely get to put my own razors over stones, but today was different these pair of 14s haven't seen a hone for a while and I have noticed a drop off in smoothness while using these two, so an 8K, 12K 20K refresh was the order of the day.

In honor of being off on Election Day, I did my civic duty by voting, and then by honing! Ever now and then I like to test my chops on the fundamentals by really tweaking an edge for all it's worth on a lower-grit hone, such as the Chosera 1k or my old standby Norton 4k, and then shaving. If I do everything right, I can usually get a pretty good shave even on the 1k. Today I finished the Ator I finished the rescale on yesterday on my Norton 8k; we'll see how it shaves, but it was tree-topping fine leg hairs pretty well, so I have high hopes!

Can’t get over how pretty that razor is. It captures the feeling of sea glass and belongs by the ocean.
The full Monte on some nice ones in the Movember Auctions.
Check them out and BID! ;)

Honed a lot of razors this week....Figure to top it off with something relatively easy this evening.
2 F. Herders which have seen neither a whisker, nor a hone. A#16 and a #17.
Going from 1k Naniwa.

Honed this one up for MikeT, after a restore.
Bevel set on the green brick, took a few hours to get past the chips n pits to reach a clean edge.
Move to a Washita, then a fast cutting, slurried, Thurigan.
And finishing on a B/G Escher, slurry to clean water.

Just out of curiosity and because I’d like a guess-timate of how long my Norton 4/8 will last, how long have you had that stone?
I’d bet a life time assuming you’re not doing it for a side hustle or a living. I had one years ago that I used for wood working. Probably lapped it 3-4 times a week for a few years. Showed little wear, no where close to how sharptons looks. I dropped it one day and that was that. I assume I would still be using had I not. Moved away from water stones and onto pastes and diamond hones for ww stuff.
I have had it for roughly 12-13 years. It was fairly worn as I got it. Another guy wanted the individual 4 and 8 stones, so I got it gratis! :D
I recently bought an almost new one for down the road. I may never get to it. Only razors have been on it.
The fellow I got it from had honed tons of razors on it and so have I. It has always lived in the water. I lightly lap it after 4 razors or so...
Love that thing.........
Raining out and bored so I am about to run the last 3 of my Herder set across the hones. The last 2 took no time at all.
These are separated by a number or 3 at the most and look almost identical, so no tape, 1 scrap of scotch tape, 2 scraps scotch tape on the scales of a 19, 20, and a 24 so I get the honing order right. The electrical tape on the spines obscures the numbers! :D
Interesting how much can be told about the different grinds as running them across the hones.
Begin on 1K Naniwa. Don't take much!

Done and done.....Through the 1k, 4/8, Nani 12K, and B/G Escher. Only 1 beer too! :rofl2:
Attachment 298078
A rather stout beer, however! Another? :D

Set the bevel with my chosera 1k and honed it with my Veinette coticule using strokes gradually decreasing in pressure without making a slurry. I am very pleased with how it turned out.
I have moved away from the dilucot method which I am starting to find a little esoteric and more time consuming.

Two more razors to add to the growing collection. Synthetic progression - 1, 3, 5, 8, 12k - to shave ready. But going to try to soften/finish them just a touch. One with a coticle and the other a thuringian.
I always enjoy the first shave with a new razor to check its edge and make sure its truly as shave ready on the face vs how it looks thru the loop.

A smaller natural combo coticule with a streak of color and a Tornblom in ivory.
The old rock and ivory together is a nice marriage! :)
