The apex is the key Sonny. If you finish on very light strokes on the 1K and strop well you should be able to get a passable shave. I’m glad you have found your foundation.

You've definitely helped me out a lot, I appreciate all the advice I get here!

Wade & Butcher Ivory / John Shaws Faux Tortoise. Beautiful razors, near wedges, they feel great in the hand..

Gave them bevels with the Naniwa 800, Then Naniwa 1k, Nakayama, Botan/Tenjou/Koma/Tomo.

HHT's are top level..

The top razor is a Hibbard Blue Beard. 6 months ago I couldn't get an edge on it, but I returned to it yesterday and it shaved great this morning.

The Blue Beard is one of those little razors with an extremely thin grind on the blade, to the point you can physically bend the portion of the blade that is under the spine. In this case, the toe was bent off to one side. I felt like I was able to somewhat bend it back straight and get a good edge up the entire blade this time.

The bottom razor is one of my Reynolds. That nice, heavy solid blade is usually what I prefer. It already has a decent edge in a few spots, so hopefully it won't take much to bring this one back.

A big Greaves near wedge on a La dressante.

I just re-scaled this razor in black horn. The bevel has very little wear and probably hasn't been on a stone since the great depression. Like most, I would usually set the bevel on a 1K but I wanted to give this aggressive coticule a shot at bevel setting. On slurry it is the fastest coti I have personally used. A few hundred passes to shine up the spine and then 1 layer of tape to finish the bevel set is the plan. My calculation put this bevel at 17 degrees combined and 18 degrees with 1 layer of tape. Right in the zone!

Patience has me about 80% there after a little more than an hour.

Helje and the Puma. Helje was a new restore I worked on so it started at the 1k. Both the razors went to the 5k and then onto the magical coticule, getting them ready to try out a translucent I picked up.

Lovely razors, beautiful stone. Is it still possible to find cotis like that?

Really good cotis seem harder to find that all but the very best jnats, but they’re out there. For one thing, I think that there was just a lot less coti (and thuri) in the quarries than jnats, so when you’re looking for razor grade coti stone, having a small deposit is a real liability. I’ve got 3 really good ones, all relatively small, and I’ve traded for or been gifted all of them. If you see a pretty one on eBay, it’s going to go high and like all naturals, still pot luck.

A really nice one is well, really nice.

Two razors that were prepped on my coticule on the 8x2 translucent used with Norton sharpening oil. Feedback was definitely different then what I am use to as well. Test shave to come later tonight after my trip to the gym. Will say the edges are definitely sharper, interested to see what the shave is like.
