Morley clover brand hard to hone?

I am far from being a honemeister but I just honed two Morley and Sons razors from bevel set up to 12k and that was some kind of ordeal. I have never taken that long to set a bevel on anything else. Has anyone on the forum ever experienced difficulty with that brand or was it just an off day?:thinking: Both were hollow ground Clover brand Morley and sons, the only difference being one was a Spanish point the other a barber notch. Never had any Morleys before and now that the ordeal is over they are sweet shavers but I was beginning to think they would never take an edge. Just wondering if anyone has fought them before?:beer2: This post maybe should have gone to razors I wasn't sure figured someone would move it if I was wrong.

It isn't the Brand

The Clovers tend to be very easy and straight forward

I've honed ten Morley's and had no problem with any of them. Might have been prudent to walk away and try another day?

Hallow Ground.... maybe you were using too much pressure?
Not sure how much you have honed.
Light pressure is the key.
Just a thought...as I am not a pro or anything, just saying what I have learned so far....

Like I said I'm not an expert could've been one of those days. After the bevel set it was all good just seemed to take an awful long time. What did a wise man say? Honing is easy til it aint.:beer1: Thanks for the feedback.

I agree with the above. I have found the Morley Clovers to be consistent and easy to hone.

And "Hallow Ground" immediately made me think

"There can be only one!"

Just a thought that came to me........
Being that you are new to honing maybe you have neglected to give your bevel setting hone a needed quick lapping. That will restore the cutting power of your hone that could be hampered by swarf build up.

I'm not exactly new to straights or honing it just seemed as if these two were just a little harder than most. After looking back to the 2008 archives it seems there was one mentor who said he believed the steel was a bit harder and they took a little more time. No worries they shave great just took a little longer for me and I appreciate the feedback. Happy New Year to you and yours also.:beer1:

One of the best razors to ever pass through my hands was a Morley, it took an amazing edge. I don't remember it being more difficult than any other hollow to hone, not nearly as hard as a stainless steel blade

I just bought one of these WH Clover & Sons, can't wait for the mail call.

Naw, no priest, but ex-Alter boy helps.

Probably too much pressure as said. If you use too much pressure with a hollow grind you can easily lift the edge off the stone.

I little bit of ink will quickly tell you.

They are good razors, I have two. One was pretty easy to hone. It was my test razor for my first hone job. My second one is particularly harder than the first, the steel just seems to want to stay on there. And this is throwing all of the honing gymnastics at it, with me being more experienced.

If this is your first razor, I would suggest getting it professionally honed.
