    Default Taping suggestion

I have been messing around with a few cheapo ebay razors. To tape the spine I have been using scotch tape instead of electrical tape. This tape is thinner and I think it does a better job of keeping the bevel the same as no tape. Plus since it is thinner, you have more of an idea just how much you are honing off -- as it will wear much faster than electrical tape would.

    Your thoughts?

When I tried this I found it to gum up the hone a bit. The electrical tape doesn't seem to affect the hone at all. You can stretch the electrical tape which thins it out quite a bit.

I'm with mparker 100 percent on this. I worried a lot about tape throwing off the angle of the bevel when I first started out, but later I realized that it has virtually no effect on the angle. I can, for example, hone a razor with tape on the Norton and then remove the tape before going to a barber hone for finishing. This surprised me, but it works.

Scotch tape tends to wear out quickly on the 4K and lower grits, which is where you really need the tape anyway. Then you end up with a couple of spots of wear if you don't realize it right away...

Some of the other guys use Scotch tape, I think, but I greatly prefer electrical tape.

    Just my 2 cents,
    Josh
