Types Of Tape Used.

I have used red Scotch electrical tape on some of my blades with good success but I got wondering about good quality 3M scotch clear Celo. tape. The electrical tape is .007" thick & the Scotch tape is a little less than .002". The edge on my A. Taglianetti German made 9/16" left a little to be desired Some micro chipping in one area near the toe. I wanted to get the edge in good shape as this razor may be sold so I took it down to my 1000 grit King then 3000 WEI WEI, 7000 King, 8000 WEI WEI My Coti under running water then stropped on my Shell Cordavan strop. All but the strop I used a piece of scotch tape on the blade & it worked great! only adding a little less than .004 instead of 14 over all made a difference I felt & saw. The tape held up real well & there was really little to no wear when I remeasured the tape. I am not a big fan of tape any way but I like this Scotch cellophane.tape.
Any thought's or ideas are welcomed!

Durn ! I never thought of using cellophane tape :thinking: Back when I started everyone said electrical tape so I used 3M (made in USA) and never looked back. I'm going to try that Scotch tape and see how I like it. ;)

Interesting idea! When I started honing I originally used dollar store electrical tape that shredded quickly, then switched to 3M tape and never looked back. Now you have given me anther idea to try:)

I have never tried the cellophane tape but I had always theorized that the electrical tape would take the abrasion and other tapes, not so much. I am curoius as to what kind of results you can get with the celo and look forward to the report.

I just enjoy trying different things. Some work, some don't! I just saw I put this in the wrong place. I meant to put it in the "Honing" section ! LOL:)

Interesting idea especially if you are not correcting any major issues and just protecting the spine

My only concern would be seeing and being able to judge the wear on the tape. When I'm doing heavy work with highly abrasive hones and 2 or more layers of tape, I use red .007" tape for the base layer(s) an yellow on top. It's very easy to judge the wear - as the yellow thins, the red becomes visible as a color shift in the contact areas.

My first impression is using this on somehting that has already been honed without tape or maybe with just one layer. Then taking it to 8k and moving up, but I think using a 1k should be avoided. Shouldn't have too many strokes and not "too" much wear on the tape. Although, it might be a pain to get the tape off between stones. Scotch tape is notoriously difficult to get off of some surfaces and might leave residue.

Cello tape also tends to not wear off cleanly IME, it can buckle and crumple under shear stresses. It does discolor fairly easily and might attract slurry as it wears.

No I am not using it for setting bevels. I used it on the first razor with the 1000 grit King as there was some very small micro chips near the toe. I used almost no pressure on the 1000 grit stone & no pressure on the other stones. I think the biggest benefit was when I used the taped razor on my Coti. The edge just sprang to life. I first used Smiths honing fluid then running water on the Coti. I was taught that finishing on the Coti with running water kept the garnets from making micro scratches on the edge.
I think I will next use it on a new purchase very dull & rusted Torry & see how well the Cellophane tape holds up under much heavier pressure. I stress using 3-M Scotch tape as I believe it is made better than the dollar store stuff. I am not saying this is the best end all other method but an experiment I hope works. I wonder if 3M makes colored cellophane tape ?It's all good!:rock:

Was it the matte or satin finish? I was thinking the smoother the better, but matte might show wear better?

Interesting tactic, never thought of that. I'll need to keep that one in the ole memory bank for future use [emoji2]

What I have now is the clear.

If you punch in "Scotch Tape" in the Search Box there are a few old threads about using very thin tapes sprinkled inside the forum

IIRC some of the guys were actually using the thin Metallic Tapes too

Some of it is just in the general Tape vs No tape threads LOL good luck in those :p

I have been using this stuff. Not as sticky, so it leaves less residue. It is not as wide so does not stick to etchings. It does not work as well on razors with really wide spines, but on most it is fine. It also holds up fine.

Alex Gilmore has used the Scotch magic/transparent tape. I've used it a few times experimenting with it. It wears out very quickly, like in less than a dozen strokes (we were both using JNats).

There are other tapes I've thought about. I've seen this tape used in industrial applications because of its durability, but I do not know about the abrasion resistance. Maybe I'll get off the fence and order some.
