So how to work out where to fit a natural stone in a progression.
If that is a question, then I will ask one too. What is your current progression?
1k chosera
5k shapton
Yaginoshima Asagi Medium Finisher
Shoubudani Asagi Finisher
Strop
Linen
Leather
The stone is Motoyama Gotogi.
Any ideas? http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...e724d6f3a4.jpghttp://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/2016...c8da8c7def.jpg
Try it and see if it can produce a quality shaving edge. If it gives a keen edge but isn't quite as comfortable as you like, but still cuts pretty fast - you have a mid range stone. If it gives you a great shaving edge you have a finisher. Many softer JNats - though not all - fit more in the mid range. Pretty simple really.
try the stone as finisher instead of your current finisher.
if that does not work try after the 5k
you can also try after the 1k too see how it performs.
From the looks of it you have a finisher or prefinisher .
The fractures on the lower corner indicates that is hard stone so i will bet on finisher
Make a slurry with a diamond plate and after 3 k began with circles and after make the Dilucot method or dilueting the slurry
I bet itwill make a good shave
Seems like way too many stones than necessary for a beginner, and dare I say, someone who is proficient. I am no expert on Japanese hones, but the more stones you throw in the mix, the more redundancy and belief in the esoteric occurs.
Well, this came in a lot with a razor I wanted. It's not like I went out to buy random unknown stones :)
I have put a bit of thought into the progression.
1k =ship removal
5k= bevel setter
Pre finisher
Finisher
Essentially I don't try to muck about with slurry or naguras. Keeping it simple
This is great advice.
Another option, that works well is to take a razor that is already in good shaving condition, use the stone and see how the blade is affected for better or worse. But this is probably more suited to the thought that the stone itself is a finisher. I have no experience w/ Jnats, so just my $.002
