Think I Found a Candidate

Well I think I found a blade to destroy. I picked this one up and hope it has no major issues as far as Honing is concerned.

I was hoping to get some opinions on whether this one will be a good candidate....

I have also been watching YouTube and reading here about honing. With the plethora of info it is kind of daunting.

I had picked up some barber hones a while back thinking maintaining. Don't think I want to go that route now. Even if I just maintain my shavers I think I need to go the full route first.

I you had it to begin again knowing what you know how would you attack it? I have nothing but a razor at this point.

Send it out to a known good hone/restoration person that has the experience. ( SRP Classifieds) That is too nice a razor to destroy!

Destroy is terribly pessimistic. Grab a Norton 4000/8000 and go for it, a cheaper rout would be film from Amazon. 30micron to 1micron and a piece of glass tile from Lowes.
Honeing isn't really that hard. Getting the perfect edge can be challenging. I think getting an acceptable edge is within everyone's reach.
Straight even pressure. Mark the edge to show if there is any warping. Go slow. I think where people "destroy" a blade is when they use hones that are too agressive, hone too aggressively or not stopping when something is going wrong.
If you are compleatly lost a scope that you can post pics from is invaluable for getting advice.
Restoring... that can destroy a blade and scales. I did. The fastest way of destroying a razor is going too fast for your skill level.
If you want to do something, just do it. IMO.

Maybe I should have said "Learn to hone with" while it seems to be a solid razor it was really cheap and has no stamps....

You couldn't ask for a better instructor. He's great when honing and a really fun guy to be around.

That would be Super if you would do that for me...

There is a great offer. You will learn more in an afternoon of sitting with an experienced honer than you will from weeks of watching you tube and trying it on your own. I also agree that you are a little pessimistic, or employing humor, it's hard to tell in text. I think starting with a solid razor with no major issues is the shortest route to a good knowledge foundation. Now that you have a live instructor I am going to say you have it all.

I was being both I guess. Seems simple but not and I always practice at being humorous...

Lynn's offer is top notch. Wish I lived closer than the wet coast. I learned a lot from hi videos but would have preferred a face to face.

Make that drive to the East. It will be the best investment that you can make in learning how to do this stuff. You will be so much farther ahead in your learning if you spend a few hours with Lynn.

Wow, this is one great community. ....

Talk about bringing research together with practical application. The things that you can't "get" from just videos and text really come together when you talk and practice with an expert in real time.

I am definitely not pessimistic or lacking in confidence about honing now, just under practiced.

So this razor I mostly honed, except a little work to perfect my bevel, will be put to face in the morning.....

I learned the bevel is the key, even with me feeling my minor mistakes on the later stones (?You would think it would be easy to keep that razor flat?) mistakes made less difference it seems with the good foundation set once put to face.

When I started I just figured weekends with a straight and learn to maintain but I am having a great time so far and love a challenge so I might as well embrace it.

To all you enablers who have helped me thus far I would like to thank you again for the wisdom. My wife and wallet may not feel the same...lol :chapeau

Glad it worked out for you. There is another lesson in that too. That is don't write a razor off as a junker just because it has no stampings. In you first posts that razor looked to be in excellent condition and hollow ground at least, if not extra hollow ground. Those vintage hollow ground/extra hollow ground razors were well made/ground, name or no name. Bet it really sings when you shave with it.

It is too nice. Take Lynn up on his offer. Some hands-on help is the absolute best way to learn. You'll learn more in a couple of hours than you would in weeks on your own. Plus you'll have a 'non-destroyed' razor!

At the end of the day it comes down to practice and learning ability.IMO

Probably, having a strong interest in honing will get you there in the end.
Sometimes it's one step forward and two steps backwards. But it's well worth the effort.
