I have a vintage antique store find (Robeson Shuredge, Rochester NY)...with a scalloped spine. Is there anything I need to do special for this when I hone? I generally tape my spines...is that all I need to do? I thought I should check before I hit the stones...

Nice looker. All I would do is tape while honing. Nothing else special AFAIK.
+1 As Jimmy mentioned nothing but tape if you want it is required for honing or stropping, just looks like something Is needed
This evening I honed the Robeson ShurEdge. I used one layer of tape on the spine and all went well. I used a 1, 3, 8, 12k Naniwa combination. I removed the tape before I stropped and I realize that taping the edge with a scalloped edge when honing AND stropping is essential. The raised edges of the scallops are more prominent. Fortunately, I started slow on newspaper first...(my usual) and noticed the scalloping "points" slightly grabbing the newspaper...so before I went to the leather I added a layer of tape and this worked fine. But what this means is whenever I strop I will have to tape. A bit of an inconvenience. I will shave-test the razor tomorrow morning.
I have *never* needed to tape a scalloped spine before stropping. Perhaps you are applying more pressure than necessary?

Perhaps you are right on this point. I will try a lighter touch in the morning when I do my preshave stropping. The high spots on the scalloped edge are not smooth like a solid spine. Not sure if you can tell this from the photo above. I am just concerned that I don't damage my strop!Quote:

If your scallops are scratching your strop then the razor has issues, I have 6 razors with scallops and never had to tape to strop. Tc
I had better luck stropping today and it didn't scrape..it was likely me...not the scallops. The razor is a gem. A keen edge and a smooth shave.
