Anyone use just diamond stones 1/4/8k with say a naniwa 12000 finisher? Thoughts on this? experiences?

I do not use diamonds on my razors, with the exception of extreme cases. There have been several threads about it. I am in the camp with the opinion that the use of diamonds in the low grits leads to chippy edges in the high grits, unless the very deep stria from the diamonds are completely removed, which I find is more work than just not using the diamonds in the first place. There are people out there that are very content with using diamonds and will tell you everything is fine and you should feel free to use them. With contrary opinions at hand your only real choice is to try it yourself and keep your eye out for what those in the two camps have said and make your decision based on what you see and more importantly what you feel when you shave. I do not hone aggressively but there are those that do that are happy with what they do. I will not condemn anyone for not being on the same path as I am on, simply acknowledge we are on different paths. Be sure to use a loupe to see what you are doing no matter how you choose to hone. Again it is not the only way but the most simple from my perspective.

I've personally not had good luck with diamonds on the couple of razors that I've tried them on. Chippy is the correct term. Could be the razors, I don't know but these diamond hones were well seasoned and do not chip knives.

If that's all that you have, use very light strokes and expect to spend quite a bit of time on the 12K to get the edge super smooth.

In my early days honing diamond plates seemed like a great idea, but in practice it didn't work out that way for me. I'll only resort to a diamond plate under special circumstances, and use the ones I have to lap waterstones, or sharpen my kitchen cutlery. Lapping waterstones I keep it 325 grit or 120. Going over 325 with a DMT (Dia-Sharp) to flatten waterstones voids any guaranty, and may ruin the plate.

About to order some naniwas 1,3or5,8,12. Was looking at the dmt as the lapping plate and just started thinking when saw the other grits. Will go with original plan just trying to figure out if going with 3k or 5k . Thanks gents

I have the 1-3-5-10 in the Chosera line, and had the 1,3,5,8,12 in the superstones at one time. There is a PDF file, in this old post from 2010, of a comparison chart of Japanese grit ratings for stones, compared with USA grit ratings.

So if you go by the Japanese ratings a 3-8-12 is a good progression. The heavy hitters seem to think, last I heard, that there is nothing to the comparison, and that the 1-5-8-12 standard is still the way to go. I had good results either way.

If you haven't pulled the trigger yet check out the Atoma 400 diamond plate. A better performer than the DMT 325 IMHO.

If you mean diamond plates ? Yeah been there done that, got the chipped edges.

My advice, fuggedabowdit & use real stones. Your face & razors will thank you.

I got mine from Tools From Japan. Atoma diamond plates. : Tools from Japan, Japanese woodworking tools direct from Japan.

Do a google search and you'll maybe find other sources that might be better based on your location.

And there is my dilema, location. Amazon is the best bet for APO/FPO just that the brand on the amazon listing is kind of weird to me. Showing generic.
