Make sure you lap it first.. If you didn't get the lapping stone, put a sheet of 1000 grit wet/dry sandpaper on a REALLY flat surface like machine-flattened marble or granite or glass... Smooth off the edges, mark a 3x5 grid on both sides with a pencil and do figure 8s until all the lines disappear. Re-draw the grid and repeat until the lines start disappearing within a few figure 8's (usually takes about 2-3 times). Give the stone a hand scrub with a powdered cleaner, knock off the high spots by doing about 10 honing strokes on each side with a really dull blade, rinse again and you're good to go.
