I just received back two razors from srd
They were both honed
Does any one know if the guys at srd
Use tape
Or
No tape
I plane on touching these blades up myself as needed ( not now they are fine)
I just don't want the change the bevel if at sometime in the future I need to put them on a hone

Lynn doesn't use Tape to hone unless it is a custom decorated spine
It really doesn't matter either way,,,
By the time the razor needs a touch up the bevel will have been beat back by your beard and corrected with stropping enough that the sub-micron difference between Tape and No tape is a moot point anyway..
Even when it is a fresh bevel it takes minimal laps,, to erase that minute difference...

I always operated under the assumption one layer of tape was to protect the spine from hone damage if it was a fancy piece. I never had any issues doing it that way.
The best way to find out would be to send SRD an email.

I agree with the others that it really doesn't matter IF you are an experienced honer with a few different stones. To the guys just starting out that would like to learn to maintain a blade with just a finisher though, this question does matter.
Well since its was most likely honed without tape adding tape will get you in contact with the edge when honing it yourself. So you would be ok honing with or without tape at this point. its only when a blade has been honed with multiple layers of tape you would have a bit more work honing it without tape. Its really your choice moving forward.
