Hone Review on Wedge so far

Hi Guys,
I'm still new to Honing, though it got better since I started using Lapping film, maybe it stepped up the aggressive cutting I wasn't doing before :)

Could you please tell me if I'm on the right track here, I got this near wedge off the bay and just simply began honing it back and forth, There was a thick edge on it originally so I've removed a lot of material to get it to this point, it's sharp from Heel to about 3/4 of the way along the edge, but the top quarter near the toe is not set yet.

I was wondering if I should dremmel the high points a little? Are they indicated by the dip in the wear pattern on the spine? I also am not 100% happy with the big wear pattern on the heal at one side.

First question. Was the wear on the spine that bad before you honed?
Wedges are a little different to hone. I generally use 2 or 3 layers of tape to protect the spine and set the bevel.
I am sure someone will come along with the proper answer.

Lot of spine ware going on. Im not going to try to help as i just dont know the right answers to give at this point. Someone will be along soon. Leave the dremmel alone is all im going to say.:dropjaw:

Ok, You are going to love this! There was zero spine wear when I got it :) ...but the edge was almost 1mm thick :banghead: ....maybe someone restored this and reground it or something? I had to lap the bejesus out of it. THe HEAL on the Lower photo doesn't have much of a bevel but it is sharp!! I think the big bevel on the other side is making a kamisori out of that section.

ok, now you can tell me I totally butchered it ...:boohoo: I don't really mind, I just want to get some advise before ploughing on ....like there's some trick to even out the wear

Wow!! that is really a bad spine. I have been buying antique razors for years and years, as I cannot afford new SR's. This is the first spine I have seen gouged out so bad.

P.S. to anyone: Is there something better than electrical tape to layer a spine???

THe Spine wear doesn't really bother me...It's pretty much a wedge and I thought the whole side of the blade might get shinny :) but obviously there's a bit of height difference between the Spine ,middle, and edge...

Sure I'll wait for a day or two for some advise and then, hit the lapping film again...I'm so impressed with that stuff!!

Spine Ware should matter. When you lay the blade flat on the hone the thickness of the spine sets the angle for the bevel. The thinner the spine the smaller the bevel angle. It may get sharp but not always a good thing to have that thin edge.

Thanks, That's a good point, lesson learned.....Would I be in a better position because this is a wedge? slightly fatter V section coming down to the edge as compared to a Full hollow?

If the edge was 1mm thick then it would take some effort to set the bevel.
Using a DMT plate would have been the way to go, keeping the spine off the hone until the edges came together or nearly together.
Where you go from here, wow, where do I start.
If you are a complete novice then I would say its too much of a hill to climb without a mentor..
Have a look for one near you is my advise..

I'm in Ireland, not a big following here for SR's.....I might just keep going with the brute force and ignorance approach, It's got me to a 2/3 - 3/4 Bevel set so far...

but maybe that last bit will be very hard to bring in ;p

No really it isn't all good .. :(

You destroyed the geometry of a Vintage razor, the worst part is that you did it when there are places like SRP where there are 100's of Honing vids and 1000's of members to help you get it right..

Thanks for saying it Glen. I just couldnt. We dont mean to be hard on you or to make fun, its just that you went so far beyond being able to save it. If you continue to hone it the odds are its only going to get worse. But the good thing is you cant hurt it any more than it already is.

I recommend you finding another razor. Use tape on the spine and change it often until you get the bevel set. Lot of vids on how to do this on line. Then go from there.

Good luck on whatever you decide to do with that one.

Ok, could you spell it out for me please, just so I know(Why is it done?), Is it the case, if a Razor develops that big a wear mark on the spine, It translates to a super thin edge that won't hold up to much? (like a previous poster mentioned)

I promise to respect the Spine from now on(I have another 6 vintage razors that I'm holding hostage so this stick up isn't over yet!), I always wondered what the fuss was about the tape, I actually read some of the wiki here, and noticed when using tape the edge gets a microbevel and just thought for some reason I'd be better off without it(too much messing and then I'd be stuck taping the razor for the rest of it's life) ... I thought there was tape guys, and no tape guys ....so I just started grinding, as I put myself in the second group.

Addison : Don't be making fun of that Sharpton guy, he sounds like a blade ninja, It's well known they only make wind chimes as a means, to focus and center their chi before peeling off the last layer of atoms from the edge of the edge of the edge!!!

It appears to me that you attempted to hone a blade with a smiling (curved) edge using technique suitable only for a straight edge. The upshot is that you have straightened a part of the edge at the expense of both the spine and the geometry of the blade.

My advice, if they are nice vintage razors, send them out to get pro-honed. This will "set the bar" for you in terms of what you're aiming for when you learn to hone yourself.

The video tutorials are great starting place, Lynn and Glen has some superb one's and the only one's I trust.

Have a few shave with the pro-honed one's and you'll know what a good shave ready razor feels like.

Next for me was learning that each and every razor is unique, the geometry is usually different enough on each razor, that you'd have to do dozens to get a feel for the various problems that you will encounter. At this point, find some cheaper vintage razors, ugly duckling's, no-name brands, or get a few Gold Dollars, and that will start you learning the muscle memory and the feel of the stones.

Once you understand, can see and feel that the bevel has been set, how to progress through the stones, you'll be able to hone your own with the much nicer vintage razors.

That's how I learned, and of course, nothing beats meeting with someone who has learned, to physically show you how it all comes together, show you under a loupe what to look for each stage of the way.

For the one's you get pro honed, that are in your rotation, first step there for me was learning to refresh, it's easy, and get's you used to putting your razors on the stone for "just the right amount" of time to get a perfect shave again.

We've all been where you are, you're not the first, and compared to some of the stuff we've seen, like a perfect Thiers-Issard Goldwing collectable razor reduced to a toothpick, it was a good learning experience...onwards as they say....:D

Thanks, I was confused, because it came with a straight edge when put on a Hone(still wide edge at 1mm).. but as you say it probably was as it flattened out from my messing and showed it's true nature....
Looks like Glenn has a lot of videos on Honing, I think I might have really upset him :dropjaw:. RIght, that was a joke earlier, I'm going to make a little coffin out of some Large Razor scales and bury this in the back yard.

To dispose of a razor safely, wrap it in duck tape with many layers first. This way no unsupection 0erson or animal will slice a finger or paw. Or grind the edge flat then dispose of it.

Just curious and in no way attempting to be critical about this but isn't there something else you would rather to spend your time doing. To me it seems to be a task of futility. I have two, not really bad shape, which I finally gave up on because I could not get it sharp enough to shave with without pain. Just asking.

Don't underestimate brute force and ignorance 😜 I started an early shift recently so I did this in work ...LOL..I'm fairly persistent even when driving 100 mile an hour in the wrong direction ...I'll chalk this one up or just grind it down until it submits ....600 grit lapping film costs only a few cents when you cut each sheet into 3..

In the spirit of taking the proverbial piss. I say keep at it until the spine wear meets the edge wear. Problem solved you wont have any spine wear any more and it will be a true wedge . Then do a shaving video with it. You know you want to.

Actually this is not un common with a near wedge, true wedge or “blank” razor. The bevel set is imperative if you want the blade to shave proper, which is the goal. There is plenty of good steel left for an awesome razor. Here’s one method of salvage..
