Bevel setting TNT improves the AHT?

I have been experimenting and learning with a razor on better bevel setting and maxing out a bevel set. I have had a repeated result of preforming the arm hair test with no result, then tried the thumbnail test which has a nice and smooth grip to it, after that re tried the arm hair test only to find out the bevel now shaves arm hair very easily.

From your experience what is happening here?

If the bevel set is shaving arm hair easily after the thumbnail test should I proceed forward?

Or should I go back to the 1k? and for how many passes?

Test vary, I'd go back to the 1K for just a few passes then see where you are.

The TNT straightened out the edge.

Often an edge that will not cut hair, will cut hair well after stropping. Remember the true edge is very thin. What we are seeing, even with magnification, is the base of the edge. An edge that thin can bend enough to not cut a hair, but can be easily re-aligned.

Then again, hair tests are very subjective, and some folk’s hair does not cut easily, yet the same edge will shave fine.

If you want to Max out a 1k, or any grit edge, look at it. Look at the bevel stria for an even shallow stria pattern and as straight edge as possible. The shallower the stria on the bevel, the straighter the edge will become.

Lightly jointing the edge will give you a straight edge. If the bevels are flat and in the proper plane, you can re-set an edge in about 10 light laps. Clean your stone face with a light lapping or slurry stone before doing your finish laps on clean water.

You can get a 1k edge surprisingly straight with a little effort.

Thank you, this makes a lot of sense to me. I will try this out tonight!

Also make sure the edges of your stones are rounded or beveled, so as not to produce a sharp or ragged edge on the stone face.

When beveling or rounding the corner of the stone with a diamond plate, make sure your final strokes are done parallel to the edge. If you go 90 degrees to the edge you can impart a rough edge corner.

When doing an X stroke where part of the razor comes off the edge of the stone, this can scratch the bevel and or damage the edge, if the corner is rough.

Dshaves, would you please describe the honing that you do immediately before the TNT?

I am using a chosera 1k, I use half strokes down the hone on one side of the blade do roughly the same for the other side I do this a couple of times and finish clean up with a few X strokes. The scratch marks go all the way to the edge and there is no light to be seen looking down the apex of the edge. The razor I am honing was made for Shave revolution before they went out of business. I believe the steel is 01 and hardness is around 62-63 HRC.
