I've owned, honed and used Gold Dollars.
My post was about my desire to see the YouTube razor video guys, hone a nice new quality razor, not some no name cheap junk piece. Why bother getting a $1000 Nakayama to hone a ten buck razor.
Bit like putting tape on the spine of a GD.

Interesting post, however, when I see these types of things I am rather amused at times.

It is exactly what I saw many years ago in the knife forums and chisel honing groups regarding the Chinese and Taiwan blades that started to come into the market a very long time ago.

Frost and others paved the way into the cutlery market with the ubiquitous cheap and affordable knives that showed up decades ago and were sneered at and mocked for doing it.

At first many knives where lacking and needed refinement, not all though.

As time passed ,many companies adjusted their qa work to dial in the quality and fit and finish, what we have now is spyderco and many others making fine and well ground and fitted semi custom blades with completely foreign steel etc.

This is not actually any different no matter how we may protest against it.

As a side note I will leave this video of Paul sellers modifying and honing a set of (cheap) chisels and whether you like paul sellers or not, there are more fine craftsmen doing the exact same thing in many hobbies and trades.

We should be wary of elitism, it does the hobby little good ,nor does it grow the base of members, instead it actually drives the groups apart and we loose fellowship with a wider cross section of fellow hobbyists and human beings. Cheers.

    Elitism?
Not embracing an inferior product is not elitist. It's smart. I certainly won't be engaging in razors v knives rhetoric, but you are entitled to your views.

You make a valid point. If one demonstrates honing using a $1000 stone, he should use a top quality razor. What hurts your argument is your presentation. Your repeated reference to Gold Dollars as junk smacks squarely of elitism. I own two GDs along with 14 top quality new and NOS razors. The GDs are not one step behind the better razors for honing up and shaving ability.

You know fellas, let's save time and anguish, about elitism, and politics, even humanity has raised its head on this thread. In my 1st post, I seem to remember talking about guys making videos using a better quality razor. I even said I wasn't going to trash anyone's razor. For anyone who can find anything in my first post that even remotely offends or attacks or trivialises anyone's razor or hurts anyone's feelings, I seek leave your honour to withdraw.

I re-read your first post to be fair. You can't say your not going to do something, then turn around and do the very thing you said you wouldn't do. That's called hypocrisy. You call GDs junk and cheap in the first post. I agree with your general point about expensive hones, but not your generalizations about GDs.
