Hi everyone. I have a questions about the changes in technique you use for Stainless blades. I honed my first last night and I found setting the bevel to be very difficult. The steel was so much harder than regular carbon steel that I found I had to use significantly more pressure to get a scratch pattern from my chosera 1K.
Are there any specific tips or tricks used on stainless blades to get a good bevel without excessive pressure? Any help is appreciated, as always!

Love my stainless steel razors. I never used any "special" techniques to hone them on a Naniwa progression. It may take longer to set a bevel and I would shy away from using "excess" pressure even bevel setting. Just be patient and take more time with near normal pressure.

I've said many times I have had to spend longer on some carbon steel razors than any stainless I have had. In general it may take a few passes more but technique and pressure is exactly the same as with any non stainless.
I think some of our pro honers will chime in and tell you there is no difference at all in honing stainless and carbon.
ya if you got a carbon steel razor that is up there in the Rockwell Hardness scale it becomes hard to hone too. but it will hone the same way just might take a few more laps up and down the stone. Tc

SS is known to be "Abrasion Resistant" rather than actually "Harder" so the difference in Scratch patterns is to be expected, I notice no discernible difference in honing them, myself..
A hard to hone razor happens every now and then, the bevel might have been just farther off, no telling, but alls well that shaves well hehehe

It was an eBay blade that was stated to be dull and hadn't been honed for quite a while I believe. There wasn't any discernible bevel when I got my hands on it. Could have just been that it needed a complete reset from scratch, which I have not experienced often.

Glad you got it worked out. I noticed in the photo there was some wear on the heel in the stabilizer- I had an "a-ha" moment when I realized not to put the stabilizer on the hone. It raises the heel and changes the contact with the blade on the stone. If you find your bevel is not setting on the bottom 1/3rd of the blade it could be that.
Of course that wear could have been there when you got the blade. Just trying to help :)

I'm pretty sure that might be some weird lighting. I tried to use a light box yesterday for the first time and it didn't work out great. I definitely always make a conscious effort to keep the stabilizers well off the hone. If there is any wear I'm guessing it might have been there previously, but i'll definitely make sure to keep heel placement in mind. Thanks!Quote:
