It is rare that I go above 10x when I check honing and when I do, it is usually something that is made of garbage metal. I rely more on the sound and feel of the metal on the stone and strop.
If you want to see a blade under high magnification, see if a local college or school will let you come by and use one of their microscopes. You can learn a lot at 1000x, but you have to be able to interpret what you are seeing.
