Pasted Paddle for refreshers...

I couldn't decide where this one belonged, so I put it here. I know there is no real answer to this question, but ON AVERAGE how may strokes on a Chromium Oxide pasted paddle would you say it takes to refresh an edge. I only ask this, because I've used a Stricht-Reimen pasted strop to refresh a few edges with great results on some blades, but dismal results on one quarter hollow I own. I am afraid of overhoning in short, but was just wondering if overhoning is even an issue with pastes.

For touch ups and finishing I would use increments of 10 strokes. Try 10 and if the razor is still not quite where you want it then do another 10, then go to the leather. This should prevent you from overshooting what the edge needs and prevent overhoning. If the razor is not already sharp from a stone though, then there is a good chance that the chromium oxide alone will not get you where you want to be in terms of sharpness.

After reading your first post again I think that I might not have answered your question. I would think that on average 10-20 passes on the chromium oxide should be enough to refresh an edge. If you are not getting any noticable improvement with the chromium then you might have to go back to a stone.

This also depends on how much paste you use on the paddle. My most effective paddles are pasted in a series of barely visible criss-crossing lines. I have to do more laps on this paddle because there is less abrasive.

Ten to 20 laps and then test sounds like a good starting point to me. :) I think the chromium oxide is less likely to overhone than diamond pastes, too.

what is the colour of the paste?
The strop was pre- pasted?
Because these strops are pasted with dovo green or red paste.

The paddle I'm using came pre pasted with green paste. It seems VERY thick. Perhaps this will help your assessments.

Wipe off that green, til it's faint and almost ghostly.

I have a chrome paddle that I almost put on ebay because it seemed to do nothing, then on someone's good advice here I wiped most of it off. Results now are amazing, provided the edge is damn sharp already off the hones.

In my experience the chrome has more of a smoothing than sharpening effect.

Alot of opinions here eh? First its hard to give specific advice because we don't know how sharp your razor is right now so its impossible to tell you how many strokes to use. Second I wouldn't be wiping off the paste because unlike diamond which is light in color with chrome since its dark it may look thick but if it was professionally applied I doubt its too thick. Actually I have the same paddle as your with chrome on one side and its the correct consistency as sold.

I would probably do strokes in groups of 15 or so. If its just a touch-up you need you shouldn't ever need more than about 30 total and thats alot for a pasted strop. If that doesn't work you may need to use a hone. If you don't get results and you really think the paste is too thick you can wet your finger and spread things out a bit.
