Its all about the pressure. I believe folks using a pasted strop use too much pressure.
A few years ago, when Chrome Oxide strops were the rage, guys were having issues with chipping. If stropped on balsa with pressure, I could easily make an edge so thin it would microchip.
Ease up on the pressure and it was fine. With a pasted paddle it is easier to use more pressure unconsciously for me.

The felt has some give and will round the edge as it removes metal. Balsa less so.

What about using lapping film mate of mine uses the equivalent to 12 k and has had great results

I’ve found the 1 micron film edge, lacking. No experience with 1u paste.
I refresh my edges with diamond pasted balsa 0.5, 0.25, 0.1.
Which is also my finishing progression after stone/ film
Mostly just 0.1, if I don’t feel edge is responding, I do whole progression.... spine leading laps. And it doesn’t a hi volume of laps.
I’ve read where some have maintained there edges idndefintely this way
