does anybody know what to use to lap a carborundum hone?.i tried to use wet /dry sand paper on my machinest flat plate'but the hone is so hard that the paper was wearing down with no effect on the hone. i have a cheep diamond combo hone. (horbor freight.) it was given to me it is a four sided block that has a grit rating of 200 300 400 and 600.it is a little better than the paper will this diamond hone be good enough.:rant:
A diamond hone is the best way to lap those hones. The HF hones that you have must never be put in water. The glue that they use is water soluble and they will come apart.

ok you got me randy how did you know about not using water with the hone?i am new to straight razor shaving i have been shaving with a straight for about 1 year although i am 46 years young i have up until last year used de razors i have all sorts of stones norton4/8k almagemite and now this cool carborundum hone please bear with me i am still ignent thanks for your reply.......sonny::

Because I tried to clean some oil off mine with hot soapy water and guess what happened!:)

I have also heard this hone is very hard...
Josh Earl offers a service, I am not sure but think he was asking $8 to flatten a hone. Yes, he is using a coarse diamond hone, but PM him for more details if interested.

I'm interested in hearing more about others' experiences in lapping carborundums. They are supposed to be fast, coarse hones, from what I gather. But the two I've lapped developed a very glossy surface and seemed to be slow cutters. Howard says he doesn't lap his--he just uses them as they come.
I use a 325-grit DMT plate to lap hones right now. I should be getting a 120-grit XXCoarse DMT tomorrow, which will be fun. :)

Be careful about lapping carb as they're not waterstones and they can get particles embedded in the surface and become less useful. I recommend DMT continuous diamond stones for lapping as they cut quick, last long, and don't dish. At $55 it's a bit of money but you'll have it for the rest of your life and you'll have an excellent tool that won't let you down. How often can you buy excellence for that kind of money?
I tried out the 120-grit DMT today, and it took the gloss right off the surface of the carborundum. I think I messed it up with the 325 somehow by being careless; maybe not using enough water while I was lapping or something. It has a uniform and rather coarse texture. Much better. :)
I'd be glad to lap yours at my normal rate. Or you could get a DMT so you can lap this and other hones in the future. It's a good investment if you'll use it.

thank"s everyone for responding to my questions about my hone i have aquired a diamond hone 300 grt and i have flattened my carb hone and it worked out very well.sorry i could"not respond this last week but i am a welder and i am very busy anywase thank you josh for your offer to flatten my hone and for randy"s response as well. now i feel i am part of the srp family (ha ha ha ha ) i sent my dovo razor to lynn to be honed wow is all i can say he sure did a great job on it hope i can do half as well next time it needs to be honed. i have a norton 4k/8k hone a amalgimite hone my tm red latigo 3"strop and some .5 .25 and 1. diamond paste i think im ready to tackle my razors wish me luck i will hook up with you all soon thanks . sonny :rolleyes:
