Default Professional Honers, What is Your Reject Rate?

How often do you return a razor unhoned, or charge extra because a razor is just so far out there that it will require a lot of extra work? What makes you throw in the towel and declare a razor for all practical purposes not worth the time to hone properly?

    Near zero

I don't allow people to just send me razors prepaid

I require contact and it allows me to weed out crap ass Paki razors before they waste the postage

I also have a work based sliding pricing schedule... simple honing is $15

    BUT

You send me a Chip, Ding, 4 beveled near wedge the price goes up accordingly, but that is agreed upon FIRST

I have found this to be the easiest system and switched to it around 2009 the 2+ years before that I had rejects that pushed me to change things

Glen knows what he is doing when it comes to honing straight razors, been at it a long time and has honed hundreds if not thousands of razors. Have never been disappointed with any he has honed for me and I've sent him a few very contrary for me razors.

So far i have had a handful of razors that really require more of a charge but i will correct and hone the blade and inform them that for future reference that would cost so much..and i have had ppl offer me extra money and apologize etc..

I am building a reputation so ill do extra for free and be grateful, edge correction, tighten the pins ,oil it, clean it, honing advise .

You may not believe me but in over 400 razors I never had one I could not home to shave ready. Even if it took longer than normal I never charged extra.

I admire anyone that would put their skills out there for anyone else to judge.

I can imagine all the thoughts that a customer would say is less than perfect.

I felt that I reached a good level when I had one that was not any better, or worse, than my own!

    Yup, 0 un-honed.

I too do not allow razors sent. I interview the client by phone or text and if I have not honed the razor prior ordo not know the owner, I have them send me Pics of the razor both sides.

I give an estimate based on the Pics, with the agreement that I will give a firm price when I receive the razor and have it in hand. Chips up to 1mm and heel correction priced at regular honing. Larger than 1mm or more than one, I give estimate and must see in hand to confirm price.

Cell phone pics have not failed me yet.

I never vary from quoted in hand price. Price is agreed to prior to work done, paid up front, cash, check or Paypal.

No complaints from those I've honed for. Though I don't do it professionally, I've been told by more than one, that the edges were better than the pro he'd sent it to, times before.

Like Glen, a bit of pre screening takes care of the trash, beforehand. But an occasional razor requiring a bit of gymnastics, is welcome every now n then.

Can confirm that Outback hones a hell of a razor. I think I may have sent him a blade that needed extra love, but the man made it a thing of beauty.
