Sound while honing on finishers

Hi folks,

When honing I try to hear all possible changes from stone to stone and of course during the laps on 1 stone.
Besides the feeling that changes when you reach the apex, the sound changes as well.
So far so good.

When reaching the 8k, there is usually not much to hear since you don't press too hard and may be go down with speed.
But most of the time you can feel a rubbing under the blade while the stone is doing its work.
You can also hear that. Usually a crispy sound.

I'm far from really pro concerning honing.
I get results I consider great for me (HHT) and more important great shaves.

Now my question:

Is the goal to eliminate all rubbing feeling and all crispy sound on the 8k and also 16k (both shapton glass stones HR)?

I ask because I tried and achieved that, but it took about 50 laps on the 8k and more than 60 Laps on the 16k.
Shave was the same as when stopping before all sounds and rubbing feel is eliminated, I guess because after honing I always finish with linen, dovo black and clean leather.
Bevel looked perfectly polished and without any microchips (600x).

Is this because of the hard shapton stones?
Do you deem it desirable to go for eliminating all sound?

Typically I hear the striations from the 1k through the mid-range hones. A zippy noise. It does get quieter as I go up.
If I hear this on a finisher, I tend to go back down for more time. Usually it can be seen with some magnification.
I prefer to see a smooth lightly frosted bevel at least as moving to the finisher. Enough time with say, an 8k can have them with a mirrored bevel. But then, you can shave off of that. Silence is golden!

I guess my hearing is just not good enough to hone with this in mind.
Sounds like another cool way to tell you are progressing. Dammit! :banghead:

Stones feel differed at different times. Synthetics load up as you go, so a freshly lapped hone has more cutting power and feels it.
Then there is stones that burnish as you go, Jnats I'm thinking of specifically, getting silkier the more usage they get from Nagura & and steel rubbings.

Personally, I focus on the shave test, not the sound while honing. Each stone will have its own sound and feel.
Btw, I seldom wear my hearing aids while honing. :)

Today I went through my Naniwa progression.
Almost no sound, especially at 8k and 12k...

Must be the shapton glass stones.

Anyway, I will try to find out more where the sounds come from... Also the feeling.
Feels like a grain of sand under the blade.
Water rinsing doesn't help (blade rinsed too).
It's like there is still material that needs to be abraded but takes forever since the grit is too fine...
I will also try to step back to the previous stone and then see if it's still there when returning...

I have used the Shapton glass once. They seemed to be incredibly fast. Might just be the characteristics?

Look at it this way. If a vinyl record had no groves, it would make no noise.

Same with your edge. The further you refine it, the lest noise it makes.

A drag car, runs on slicks/bald tires, because more rubber on the road means more traction.

Hence the sticking/drag that's created on the finisher.

I'm not going to die from Corona,, I go out once a month and wear 4 mask on my face, one on the front of my jeans and one on the back because I want all entry points covered. I also tuck my jeans into my socks and carry a 6 ft pole to make sure everyone keeps their social distance.
