What about a Wapienica? Cheap, good quality, nice shaver and a confidence builder in terms of honing. I haven't been looking lately - are there still some left?

Isaac, Jimbo,
I'd like to suggest that one go to the member's list and look up Wojtec76. He was the original seller of those razors and still has them listed. I've done business with him and can highly recommend his products and service and his personal information has a link to his webpage.:tu

Other's might not agree with me, but I had the biggest learning curve off one of my better razors (around the £50/$100 mark). I guess a better razor is easier to hone and I just took the view that if I did mess it up, it could always be sent to a pro to be fixed.
I have to agree with rupert87.
Since I am no stranger to sharpening things, but am new to honing razors, I decided to start with razors that were new and good vintage blades that were new to me. If you are careful in your approach and use good hones in a reasonable progression, you won't ruin a razor. You may not get it as sharp as it could be, but that should come with practice.
Here's the rub, so to speak: the more you practice on the good razor, the more you wear away the blade. This probably won't be too troublesome if you pick up honing skills fairly quickly, but if you stubbornly work at honing one razor, you will get some nice spine wear and your razor will end up looking like one of the ebay "good condition" treasures. Still functional, but a treasure nonetheless.
I tried honing three razors yesterday and shaved with one this morning. It could be a bit sharper, but I got all the stubble in two passes and left all the blood on my side of the skin. Things are looking up.
