how to hone a wedge

is there anything special to honing a wedge blade? i have a W&B 7/8. with a hollow ground, the spine lines up the edge, but what about with a wedge?

Wedges can be tricky, what i do is use a 45 degree angle as opposed to a 90 degree angle. When talking about angles, its the angle of the edge to the side of the hone. Most wedges are a little softer than say of full hollow but getting used to honing at a 45 degree angle is tricky and takes practice. The spine is what dictates the edge on all razors, thats why when you tape the spine the angle increases causing a different angle on the bevel and spine. Honing wedges just takes practice, even strokes and no pressure just like honing a full hollow.

The only thing I'll add is the addition of time. Alot of time. You have alot more metal to remove with a wedge so you need to have patience.

Also be aware that the bevels might not be perfectly equalalong the length of the edge. Especially with smiling wedes I've found the bevels to be wider at the toe.

and because of the thickness of the blade, the bevels will be much wider than with a hollow ground. so even if you can see a bevel, that is no guarantee that the bevels are touching each other at the edge of the blade.

Thanks guys i new i forgetting to mention something. I wasn't thinking about the time or the shape of the edge and bevel. These are also important factors in honing a wedge.
