Rule #1 for basic honing...

a brick is not a hone... (write that 10 times)
a brick is not a hone.


and anything coarser than 4000 grit or ultra fine is not advisable for use unless you are restoring or setting a new bevel.

Norton 4000/8000 are good starter hones, and will last you a very long time...

and blue and yellow coticle stones are very very bad ship them to me so that I can properly dispose of them.:w:D

Whaddaya mean a brick is not a hone? Recently BC (before the crash [we may have a new acronym here:y ]) there was one who wanted to know how to cure a razor which was too sharp. Dipping into my deep reservoir of knowledge, I recommended an 8 grit brick thus, I believe, establishing its credentials as a hone.:tu
