I know we talked about this, but it seems I spoke too soon. I've got a couple razors here that don't sit flat on the hone. I'm trying to set the initial bevel with my DMT, so I'm not sure that I can apply the rolling motion. How would you honemeisters hone something like that on a DMT?
I just worked on a Robeson Shuredge that had this problem, a slight amount of warp. The center touches on one side but not the other!
What can you do?
Basically, I honed it into enough of a smile that one side has to be rocked when honing, and the other side lies flat, or needs just a little rocking.
This way I can get the entire edge honed.
The bevel looks funny, on one side it is thin in the middle and thick on the ends, and on the other side it is thicker in the middle and thin on the ends.
The thing shaves like nobody's business though--really really sharp and smooth.
You can use a narrow hone. Some barber's hones will allow for warp but they take forever to cut. But I also hate to ask, is your hone flat? If the hone isn't flat it will make you talk to yourself and frustrate you to no end.
It's a dmt, so I hope it's flat. That's really the reason I asked since I can't do the rocking motion on a 4" hone. The other part of my problem is that it doesn't touch in the middle on one side.
I've heard that a half-inch to one inch hone with slightly rounded/chamfered edges is the way to go with a warped razor. Of course this isn't an option on a DMT.
I tried that with a warped knife on a slipstone (approx. 600 grit) and a Swaty with a single 1/4" chamfered edge and got very good results.
