Trying to set the bevel.

I am trying to set a bevel on one of my grandfather's old razors. I used a sharpie and drew a line on the blades edge. I read that in a post somewhere. On the one side I could get all of the marker off. On the other side The center of the blade, the marker would not come off. I was using a norton 4k. Should I buy a norton 1k? Or is here something going on here that can n ot be fixed with a hone? Thanks.:confused:

The ink left indicates a high spot where the hone is not contacting. I don't understand how you have all the ink off on the other side. Tho I'm experienced in knives and not too much with razors so I'm lookin for the old timers remarks.
Good for you on thinking of using the ink.

The ink only goes on the bevel surface which is a tiny strip along the edge.
Is it possible that you have the ink riding high on the blade so it's noyt on the bevel but on the side of the blade?

Quite common, I find that one side of the blade on a razor will lie flat on a hone and consequently will have even removal of the marker on the bevel and yet the other side will have issues. I'm working on a razor now that passes the marker test except for the toe, then on the other side, the opposite of yours, the center makes contact with the hones but the toe AND the heel don't. I'm waiting for the rolling hone stroke video, but at this point, sorry guys, this guy adds a wee bit of pressure where needed to manually correct.

I forgot the flex in razors....

There are several things that could cause the marker to come off one side but not the other. Take a closer look at the bevel and try to determine if it's making any contact at all. One side of the bevel might just be rounded over from years of neglect.

You can fix this with the Norton 4K, but it will require time and lots of patience.
