different hones for different razors

First off, let me say that I am a hone noob... only about 20-ish restored razors under my belt so far. My current gold standard for shave ready-ness? It pops off the arm/leg hair with the razor about 1/16" to 1/8" above the skin. Everything from "pluck the hairs and clip em" to "ghost em in half" is acceptable shaving territory to me.

I know that honing isn't voodoo but... I'll be damned if some razors just refuse to hone to shave ready off some stones.

Yeah, yeah. I know this forum is rife with more experienced honers who say the same thing, but when you affirm something itself it's kind of an epiphany.

Case in point: I have 3 Genco razors, and 2 hone up like magic on the spyderco Fine & ultrafine. The third refuses to play nice unless I hone it on my coticule combo stone. I have honed, tested, gone back to the DMT 1200 and started over a few times to confirm this.

I have a few other razors that are the other way around too, or only feel good off the DMT 8k/pasted paddle combo trick.

I am developing a love/hate obsessive relationship with honing, and this only intrigues and infuriates me more. I really want one of Old School's Japanese razor hones like I want air, and once I get the money I am on that like Andrew Zimmern on a cow brain.

It's not RAD, it's necessity... right?



Edit: I forgot my origional point! Is there any way to tell, when establishing a bevel, if a razor is going to like a certain kind of stone?

If you ask Old_School to set aside one of his incoming hones at your price point, he may be able to accomodate you. He tends to take care of folks from SRP.

According to my recent bank statement, my price point will be 0.00 for several months. It seems I must wait, but that makes the reward all the greater!
