Can anyone tell me what grit rating a Belgian coticule is?
8k and up sort of.
It's a unsatisfying answer but the answer is it depends. It depends on the quality of the stone and the amount of slurry you are using. Generally speaking, you might say that a coticule is around 10 with water only. Using a slurry, it may be around 8K depending on the amount of slurry.
However, the interesting thing is that you may get a better edge off a coticule than a chinese 12K due to the shape and polishing quality of the garnets that polish the blade.
I agree with that, even though I don't like it!!
I grudgingly admit that my coticule edge feels darn near as good as a much finer hone, even though the scratch patterns don't even compare...via naked eye and microscope. Sigh.
