The coticule is a really versatile stone, with slurry it removes metal quite fast and without slurry it polishes well, if your goal is to finish/polish the razor on it, then you should only use water, btw I've had good results adding a drop of dishwasher detergent to the water.
Since the coticule is a natural stone there will be differences in the way they work, so you'll have to invest some time in experimenting with the stone.
I've never overhoned a razor on my coticule, and I've think there's a thread somewhere about a overhoning experiment, but I'm unable to locate it.
That is agood explanation and makes sense thank you
As has been noted in other threads all natural stones vary. I have 3 coticules and all three cut differently. My 8X3 natural cuts fast with water on either side while my 6X2 tiger stripe is a much slower cutter. I use it with slurry then without. My 8X2 Kosher is slower yet but great for finishing. I have never honed dry and have no plans to try it.
Boy, this thread makes me want to get another coticule.:D
I wonder if we have a BIG coticule club:D?
Mines a 12x4 natural:y Sorry for bringing it up again:o
Go and grab one Gary their pretty and work well even in my 'beginners hands'.

where did you get it from
I was bored, so I started doing silly searches. I came across a used microscope shop.

and there it was!
So I asked if the size was correct without trying to sound shocked (considering the very undervalued price) the lady said she could barely lift it, so I said "I'll have it"
If you do a search for "monster coticule" or "John Holmes" on here you'll see pictures of it.
