Correct Chrome Oxide? DMT?

Do you guys think this Chromium oxide would be the correct kind? There's no mention of micron or fineness.

Also, Which DMT stone is the one everyone mentions for lapping stones? Like for lapping a norton 4/8k and finishing hones. I 've seen names like DMT 325 grit and DMT 8C but I don't see anything like that on this site:

Reason I ask is that there's a woodcraft retail store near me and it would be much easier to pick these up there!

The DMT for lapping is this one: Dia-Sharp 8" X 3" Coarse #147303

As for the Chrome Oxide I've onely used the one from HandAmerican, as seen here: Japanese Knifesharpening

The DMT 325 side of a DMT duo-sharp, works great too.

The block below it called Micro Fine may, MAY, be of the right particle size. I believe that stick is made by Veritas and is claimed to be .5 micron. One of these days I'm going to try some and will report back; however, holding one's breath may not be advisable - I'm slow and easily diverted.:nj

to Bruce: Thanks Bruce. Not gonna risk it! lol. Just purchased a small amount of the correct chromium from Chris_L here on the forum. He bought Hand American brand .5 micron chromium oxide powder and has been portioning it out to members for $4 per person because they give you a ridiculous amount of it.

If you look carefully at the label on the pot of teh Japanese knife sharpening Cro OX it clearly says 0.5 micron and then either 50k or 60k grit, i can't quite make it out.

I came across a company called Dialux (Vert for Cro Ox and Rouge for red) too who make a whole range of ultra fine rubbing compounds for a very good price, teh rougge is 0.1 and tehy supply the jewellery trade so they must have adhered to some industry standard.

I've done a ton of research on Chromium Oxide. As can be expected, there are many grades of Chromium Oxide. The key industries chromium oxide is supplied to are: Paint companies, Laboratories and the Cosmetic Industry.

Most chromium oxide is manufactured in China now. There is one U.S. company that manufactures high grade Chromium Oxide. Chromium oxide can be purchased based on particle size. Remember, reported particle size is an AVERAGE when it comes to a compound like this. Even the ".5 micron" Hand American would be an average. If it was even possible to guarantee that every particle was exactly .5 micron, the cost of such a pure compound would be extremely expensive. I was told by one distributor I talked with recently that the cost of Chromium Oxide is going up because the cost of the raw materials to manufacture it are rising significantly.

The Hand American supplied chromium oxide has been proven to be a high quality consistent performer for our needs. My patent response if it's worth anything to what seem like other sources is: "Try it out. Don't buy a ton of it because it may not work well for stropping razors or maybe it will; and, buyer beware".

Some guys have reported having good results with rubbing the various incarnations of waxy blocks of green chrome products on strops while others have had bad experiences. Personally I have no interest in buying blocks of compound and using it for stropping. To each their own.

Inexpensive bulk and lower grade chrome ox is perfect for tumbler polishing applications for example. The finer the particle size average, the more expensive the chrome ox becomes with that product.

BTW, Hand American has always said .5 micron = 60,000 grit while Shapton rates their .5 micron stones at 30,000 grit. I go with Shapton on that.
