laping the hone?
I have been at this for 8 months. I really like the srt8 experience but..I have almost removed all the groved indents on my Norton honing stone trying to get my nort 20/40 flat.
I think it may be the ceramic plate I use w/ 320 wet/ dry.
How can I be sure the 6" X6" ceramic tile is flat? I understand others have used glass but I don't see how glass would be this enough.
I end up using a barber hone prior to every shave and I seems to be less and less effective.
Thanks Al

Well, generally it (the ceramic tile) would be flat enough I'd guess. I use a bit of glass, and I know others just use their kitchen bench top.
Plate glass will definitely be flat enough - if you are worried about the flatness of your ceramic tile, can you locate some glass? I grab a sliding glass window from an old cupboard I have downstairs. Failing that if you are really concerned you could buy a lapping plate. Plenty of posts on here regarding lapping plates.
Are you drawing pencil grids on your hones when you lap them?
James.

yes using the grid lines
As a matter of fact the lines are more worn on the outside.
How often do you lap the stones? after so many series?

In your original post you said that you honed prior to every shave. Are you sure you are not overdoing it?
