DMT for setting the bevel and then use a Shapton?

I have a DMT8EE and would like to get a DMT8E which I believe is 1200 grit to set bevels. After the 8EE I use a Shapton 16K that I got recently and I am hooked! The results are very good to say the least. I will probably get a 30K but that is down the road. Is it ok to go up from the DMT8E to 8EE then finish with the Shapton and then go to 0.5 and 0.25 paste. I have found that my edge stays sharp much longer than before when I only used the 8EE and pastes and it is a lot smoother shave. I really don't want to spend a fortune on honing because I am doing this to just keep my razors in great shape and ocasionally buy a good razor that needs a bevel set.

Hello Richard. I have had the DMT 8K and found out right away that it was rougher on my blades than I liked. It took a longer time with the next higher grit to get it as smooth as I wanted. The Shapton 8K is about the same price as the DMT 8K and does a much better job. The DMT 1.2K will set a bevel and fast but again it is very rough on your blade. The Shapton 1K is the same price as the DMT and makes a nice bevel setter. Shapton GlassStone Waterstones

I have the DMT 1200 and the 8k and I REALLY don't like my 8k anymore. Way too rough. I would go with the Shaptons if I had to do it over again.

I like the idea of a stone that reacts the same all the way through, not slowly wearing out like the DMT's.

I still use my DMT 1200 (never used the Shapton 1200), and like it now that it's broken in, but I defer to 2Sharp on that, he knows his stuff!

Bj you mention the 8K being to rough. Are you referring the the 8EE? Thanks guys for the input so it is off to the Shapton 1K I go.

Yes the DMT 8EE which is 8K. It will do the job but there are other hones in that range which are smoother such as the Norton 8K which I liked but wasn't as fast as the Shapton plus you don't have to soak the Shaptons. I never liked the Norton 4K. I have no experience with the naturals so won't comment but they have quite a following.
