use of diamond paste and crom.

After not getting good enough results in using my 12k chinese.
I've decided to try out diamond paste.And I also want to use the cromium sold on straightrazor designs.
I could't find any conclusive info of this on the wiki, so in advance I appologice that I have to be fed the info with a spoon.
I'm not sure as of what order the different pastes should be used.
So far my plan for final polish is:

norton 8k
12k chinese
0,5 diamond
0,25 diamond
Cromium
stropping.

I also have the thiers-issard paste that I'm considering using in one step as well.
I will purchase tony millers 4-sided strop for the purpose.
Any feedback will be greatly appriciated.
Ps: I realise that the poor results comes from poor honing skills, and not the stones.

Every razor responds differently. I have experimented with .25 dp and I find it creates a wicked sharp edge- that ,at least for me, is uncomfortable. YMMV:shrug:

On the other hand... I have used .50 micron diamond paste on a balsa strop with great success. Prior to getting the Shapton 30K- I had been using it on practically all my razors, and really liked the shave. If you find the edge to be too harsh- the CrOx on a balsa strop can work wonders.

Balsa wood is readily available, cheap and works incredibly well with both Diamond paste and CrOx. :gl:

I think I'll keep the 12k chinese in my routine for the smothnes.

I don't use a Norton. I never have a set "recipe" of hones- I let the razor dictate what steps are required to take.

Remember-once you set the bevel you then work to refine the edge by using finer hones. In your first post you listed an order you would follow-and it lists a 12K chinese as your finest stone. Use that-then go to the paste.

I watched Lynn's DVD yesterday, he pretty much swears by the Noton's 4k/8k followed by the Coticule.
I'm about where you are as far as your hone procedure. Really, whatever works for you. It's not unreasonable to go from those hones to the pastes. Try with and without and see what works. I may go to the di .5 to .25 then to cro2. after the rocks. I use a ch 12 k too.....

he he.I've watched that dvd about 10 times.At first I didn't understand that he was explaining the pyramid procedure for a relativly new razor.I tried a couple of 5-5 3-3 1-3 and 1-5 on my first ebay blade.Talk about frustration:D
So, are you getting good results with your 12k?

When I played with paste I jumped straight from 8k to .5 dp and it work ok, I've never gotten .25 dp to give me good edges. If you want to try pastes start out with .5 dp and chrome, if you need sharper edges give .25 dp a go.
