Yes, definately.
I use 1000 grit wet and dry paper, wet.
Don't worry about wearing away the hone, it last for years and years and years and years.....
Hello lawman,
imo it is a couple of times neccescary to flatten a coticule. For a test you lay your coticule on a flat piece of glass. Wenn you can pusch one or more corners down, the coticule is not even.
You can sign it with a waterproof marker and flatten it on a waterproof sandpaper, gritt 400. The sandpaper must be wettened and be on a flat piece of glass. Then move the coticule circular till the markersigns are removed. So the coticule is completely flat.
Hi, if you don't have the DMT then wet & dry paper on glass will do it. All natural stones need to be lapped & many of the man made's too.
Those two posts weren't above me when i started to answer this!
The wet dry works and I used it for a while. But I think the DMT was the best 50.00 I have spent on honing. I havn't got the shapton bug yet though.

BTW if you buy a hone from Howard the 5.00 to lap is money well spent. Laping my 2X8 the first time about wore me out.
I agree the DMT is best for this. I have gotten abrasive particles in the surface of my hones using sandpaper. My yellow coticule did not need lapping straight from Ardennes.
What you need to do is examine you coticule closely. I've been using my coticule I got from Howard for years and it has never been lapped and it works fine.
