Not so great after all? Or is it just the shaptons that are so amazing?

I still stand by my original review. I have been using the Chosera 10K on most of my honing jobs since I got it. It leaves a very keen edge. I can't compare to Shaptons or Nortons, because I don't own those hones. Before I purchased the Chosera 10K, I used various progressions with a DMT-E, a collection of BBWs and Coticules and a Nakayama from OldSchool. That provided me with plenty of smoothness, but I wanted to have more keenness. The Chosera 10K gave me just that. I can't imagine wanting a keener edge than what I can achieve with the Chosera 10K. It still leaves margin for finishing on one of my Coticules or the Nakayama, which both give the edge their own typical quality. It lends the edge a kind of benignity, that the Chosera by itself does not provide. Chosera 10K edges are certainly very smooth and cause no irritation, but they are very prone to shave off hair papillae, leaving tiny bloody specks. Finishing it on a Coticule or Nakayama resolves that issue for me, without sacrificing the sharpness, but I can't reproduce that sharpness without using the Chosera first.
The Chosera 5K is a very good hone, but I have many alternatives for its use. I'd put it in the ball park of a Belgian Blue with slurry, maybe a bit faster.
I too look forward to more comparisions with other hones, and experiences of other gents. I know srp-member English uses one, and I believe he likes it a lot.

Although I have yet to hone anything on them I have the 3000 and the 5000 with the 10000 coming my way in February.
It is my first set of hones and I expect to only add a Japanese Natural to top things off.
At present I have a Thuringian from Kees that keeps my razor nice. And if I need a little bit more I have been using lapping film on a slab of plexiglass.
I am really looking forward to these and assume that I won't need to add anything further than the Japanese natural put a final finish on my razor(s).
BTW I found Bart's review very helpful and Marin at rasurpur seems to rave about them.
I want one so badly, but the $ is just more than I can (should) go for, considering I don't NEED one!
+1 but that never stopped me before. :shrug: Still, I can't imagine that it would be any better then the Shapton pro 15 or 30.Quote:

I doubt there is any magic in the abrasive- naniwa hones are good regardless. The secret is in the binder. The goal of Japanese water stones has always been to make one that works and feels like a nat. Maybe not exclusively "the goal" but that's part of it. Not saying that the Chosera is that stone as i dont have one
