Its just soap, shouldnt be a problem. If it bothers you, just rinse the hone when finished. Ive tried it a couple of times now and I think Im going to keep using it.

It is a good question. For my part, I fully saturate the hone in plain water for about an hour, so the soapy water is probably staying pretty well on the surface.
I have no idea what's in regular dishwashing liquid, but I also wonder whether my "Mountain Suds" biodegradable camping soap might be oil-free.
I think the only way to damage some synthetic hones is if you leave them soaking for a long time in a solution of Sodium Carbonate (washing Soda) which may be in some detergents. Some will tend to dissolve. As Nun said "rinse when finished". No problemo.
When using lather
do you use the same consistence as when shaving or do you add some water to make it thinner like a slurry
I gotta try the a few drops of soap in the water technique. Hopefully it will turn my honing efforts from adequate to awesome.
Should I start with my Norton India Giant Combination? Brown side or orange? Just kidding. Crystolon her we come!

Maybe start with a house brick Bruce :rofl2:
Hello all,
Sorry to bother you all.
I am looking at the Norton stones site, i am looking at wet stones, can i ask if the Norton 4/8k you experts talk about is the extra fine/ultra fine 4000/8000 8 x 3 x 1" WATERSTONES ???
many thanks
Brian
i have just seen that one is £70 so for what i need to do isnt really worth it, all i need to do is send it off to Steve or one of his pals At Home sister company to The Invisible Edge for just over £16 for hone & strop.
I have 14 Straight razors but i will only rotate 2 for my shaving....well for now anyway lol.
regards,
Brian
Thanks. I have to try this lather thing. I need a little better sharpness. I hope this does it.
