Knife honing (not razor) with natural stones?

Hey guys,

As I'm super excited to get my coticule and BBW in the mail tomorrow, I'm looking for ways NOT to destroy my own razor hehe. I have to fight temptation not to hone it, as Bart has given it a wonderful wonderful and comfortable shaving edge already. While I'm also waiting for an old cheap razor to end up in my posession (probably around a week or so) I'm VERY sure I will not be able to resist sharpening 'something' on my stones :-D

Would it be possible to sharpen my kitchen knives on a coticule with slurry for example? Just wondering, and if possible, is the technique pretty much the same as with a razor ? The only knife sharpening videos I can find use belts and such, but I wanne use my stone(s) :nono:

Technique is similar and yet very different. You do not "ride the spine" to get the angle on the vast majority of knives at least and tend to have a different bevel angle but folks who have thought quite a bit about knife sharpening will debate the merits of various bevel angles and types....

that post has some info on knife sharpening. I think you could polish up your knives quite well but if the knives are really dull you might want to start on something coarser and save that gorgeous stone for the finer work ;)

The only 'stone's' that i share between razors & knives are my DMT's. There's no risk of doing any damage to them. I would never be inclined to take a knife to any other stone that i use for my razors. If i did, i'd lap them before the razor went near them again & find i had paper thin stones in no time. It's your coticule though. Fight temptation to take a perfectly good razor to them too, you'll only be wasting good metal at best & you may even find you've taken the sharpness back a notch or two!

If have a nice Coticule/BBW combo bout stone in my kitchen. Each time before using my kitchen knives I give them some passes on this bout. Success guaranteed when you are cutting up your meat and vegetables!
The same with all type of hunting and pocket knives. You can even sharpen you wood chisels on our stones!

hone a knife blade like a Str8 Razor and You'll get a even sharper knife. I do all my knives the way You sharpen a razor and I can shave with all my knives. I hunt so I need a very sharp knife.

You can get a KILLER edge with coticule +slury on a good knife. It will cut meat or whatever you want like a...uh, sharp knife through tender meat?? :shrug:

Keeping the angles during your passes takes a lot of practice though.

Isnt the coticule a little too fine for a knife? :shrug:

I have Kasumi kitchen knives and the hone is 240 grid on one side and 1000 on the other. The 1000 grid gives a nice, sharp knife that can cut a soft, ripe tomato in thin slices.

To get the angle right (10° IIRC), they make little metal clips that you slide over the spine to keep the angle constant by simply laying the knife with the clip installed onto the hone.

I don't think the issue was the ability of the stone to sharpen a knife, but rather would you use the stones that you hone your precious razors on to sharpen knives & razors?
I wouldn't doubt the abilities of a BBW or coticule, but i'd have a seperate one for my knives, chisels, whatever.
Knife sharpening is generally more aggresive. It may well result in dishing of the stones. I know it need not be so aggresive, but a knife honed up to a razor edge becomes useless at a rapid rate due to the delicate nature of an edge that fine.
I can shave arm hair with my knives, but they don't have a razor's edge.

I don't have any hones that are 100% dedicated to razors. The thinner and more expensive one is to replace the closer it approaches 99%:). It certainly does not ruin them. What are you lapping with?:gl:
