Honing instructions inside Norton 8000?

Hi everyone, just hoping for a little expert advice here. I'm fairly new to the art that is straight razor shaving but I definitey love it and all aspects of it. I recently bought a Norton 8000 to complete the set (I have the 1000/4000 and the Chinese 12K) and the instructions inside mention that one should start on the coarsest grit and move up the next hone when a burr edge or wire edge is formed. I understand what they mean but is this advice for knives or does it apply to straight razors also?

I believe those instructions are more for chisels and such. If you are starting with a new razor or one with an edge that is in good shape you can set the bevel on the 4K. If you are honing a razor with chipping or an edge in poor condition you might want to start with the 1K. Here is some good stuff in the SRP Wiki to point you in the right direction. :gl:

Cheers Jimmy, I have read a fair bit about razor honing and nowhere had I seen this advice, to hone until you have a burr.

Yes I think that is limited for most tools and knives but definitely not razors.
