Hey guys,
I've been trying to hone this thing for a while now and it's just not going anywhere. My main problem is that it only seems to cut hair on one side of the razor. It's not perfect on that side but at least it's cutting hair relatively easy off the 8k, but when I flip it over, it doesn't even come close to cutting anything.
Any idea what might the problem here?

Have you looked at your bevel with magnification ? An eye loupe or a microscope ?
No, I don't have one. I've tried putting some red sharpie on the edge to see if it was removing it. After about 15 strokes on the 4k, everything was gone except for a little spot on the toe. Probably about less than 10% of the blade.
I should also point out that the razor is a singing razor with a slight smile.
I would say that 15 is a lot of strokes to remove marker from a bevel. I use the marker test to determine what type of stroke I need to attack the bevel. If the marker isn't gone in two or three round trips with a flat x stroke at 90 degrees to the hone I start looking at either a 45 degree x stroke or a rolling x.
I can't get by without at least the 30x eye loupe and microscope I have. Really makes a difference to me to see what is going on with the edge.
So what would you recommend I should do?
I have a norton 4k/8k, coticule, barber hone and cr0
I also put one layer of tape on the spine.
TIs are great razors. Yod don't want to use one as a learner. Yor best bet is to send it to a honemeister to establish a proper bevel and finished edge. Pick up a good but inexpensive razor afterwards to hone with the TI as your benchmark.
You have the tools to get it where you want it. On his honing video heavydutysg points out that most razors guys send him when they fail to get them sharp require more work on the bevel setting. The foundation of a sharp edge.Quote:

Before I had magnification I was at a disadvantage with my honing. It may reveal what the problem is immediately. BTW, kaptain_zero is in Canada I think. You might send him a PM and see if he is near enough to you to help. He is a very knowledgeable man.
What TI model is it??

It's the 'Le sonnant' model .
Got it.....These tend to be the lower end of the TI's and the 5/8 has always resembled a 4/8 to me.
If your bevel is set, I would play with 10 stroke increments on the Coticule followed by the chromium oxide and see if it gets you there. Once really close, then 10-15 on the chromium oxide should do it.

the razor is actually a 6/8. I don't understand why I should try the cr0 if the razor doesn't pass most test after the 8k? I thought the cr0 was only to smooth out an already shave ready razor? Please correct me if I'm wrong.
The only test I rely on is the shaving test. Many times if a razor is pretty close, the chromium oxide will get it there. So will a few more Coticule strokes followed by the chromium oxide. Just depends on the razor.
The progression I gave you off the 8K, should give you an idea where you are at particularly if you strop and test shave the razor.

But what would be the cause of the razor only cutting hair on one side. When I flip it over it doesn't do anything?

This blade sounds like a bugger to learn on.
I'd like to get it done myself. I know it might not be the best thing to do but I got three other razors shave ready by myself. I wonder if going back to a lower grit something around 1000 grit would help to make sure the bevel is set right.
Going back to the 1000 won't hurt anything, but I would not go back there every time. Just too much steel removal. One more time back through your stones might just take care of it. FYI usually when one side in the honing process cuts differently, it means you are putting more pressure on one the stroke on one side of the razor even though you may not realize it.

I won't belabor the point anymore but if you had 30x or better magnification you would see what the bevel looks like on either side and that might give you the answer you're looking for.Quote:

Have you taken it to just a plain strop yet? How about right after the 8k? Maybe stropping right after each grit and testing will let you zero in on where something is not agreeing with it. I've heard of somebody trying backhoning the whole time. I just got a ti 1/4 grind and hope I don't have the same problems you are having.
