for setting a bevel & finish...

ive done my research on different hones. i use a norton 4k/8k for sharpening/polishing

so i naturally i figured id get a norton 1k stone (really the 1k/4k stone because i dont see a dedicated 1k stone from norton) but figured id look around to see because maybe a different stone might do this aspect of the honing process more efficently. so i looked into the d8e. does a 1200grit diamond stone produce the same effect that a 1000 grit waterstone will? i have no experience with diamond stones, and i have read some dont like the feel or "feedback" of them. i have heard the shapton glass stones are great as well, but i never really heard user like/dislikes with them. its always the same "each type of stone has its ups and downs and its really based on style of honing". and now im reading the naniwa stones are a great buy.

so if anyone has used the norton 1k, d8e, shapton 1k, naniwa 1k stone please let me know what you liked or disliked about them. like i said i use the norton 4k/8k and i like the feel for sharpening, but that doesnt mean im gonna like the feel of the stone when trying to set a bevel.

the only question i really have for finishing stones are what makes the belgian coticule so great over the shapton 16k? i just read in a post that the shapton 16k does what some 10k stones do and more...

ive done some reaearch but i dare not say i researched everything. if i missed anything, have any misconceptions please feel free to correct my errors. i just wanna know im headed in the right direction.

I've got the Norton 1K single grit, the Shapton Pro 1 & 2K and the DMT D8E 1200. I mostly use the 1200 now. With a couple of drops of dish soap in the water I find it hard to beat. It is much faster IME then anything else I have used to set bevels. The others are good too with the Shapton being a bit faster for me then the Norton.

Keep in mind doing a lot of restores I work with a ton of edges that need real help...

The Norton 220/1k is a very versatile stone.. but it needs to be soaked first
The Naniwa and Shapton 1k's are really fast cutters and leave a very smooth edge behind, either one of these would be at the top of my list, the Naniwa has a slightly, read slightly softer feel to it and comes with it's own stone holder attached and beats the Shapton in price....
If you don't own the rest of the Shaptons I would pick the Naniwa, or the Norton 220/1k for a dedicated bevel setter... JMHO of course..

I know you don't have one, but have you used the DMT 1200? Just curious if you tried it, then went with the naniwa or something else because you liked them better... or if you just never got one because you had the shaptons and naniwas already.

I use a DMT 120 for bevel setting. Works fine for me.

I don't do restorations, if a razor isn't at least as sharp as my utility pocket knife I don't bother. Thus, I have never had to set a bevel beyond what I can do with the 4K side of my Norton.

I'd be happy to take any of those junk razors that you have off yer hands....
I'm sure I can get some of them up and running and send them to Bill for the monthly giveaways....

Honestly I never went that route, because back when I joined here, they had a reputation of leaving deep scratches, then people found that if they were broken in properly they worked way better.... By then I was to far enamored with water stones to change...
