I think it can make an edge a little sharper and also make a sharp edge smoother. I use it most of the time; either on glass or a hone. I used to watch Grandpa use it on his razors and other cutting tools.
I've read that the ink is (very) mildly abrasive, & that large dark areas such as photographs are best. IDK for a fact whether this is true, but it sounds plausible. I do know that draftsmen, back in the pen-and-ink days, used to have sharpen their bow pens periodically, but again IDK whether it was the paper or the ink grinding the pens down.
Now we know why the pen is mightier than the sword. It's all that stropping on paper! :rofl2:
It's a shame most newspapers barely report news any more. It makes me want to cry when a Big Brother "story" is on the front page. Even by tabloid standards that's depressing.
Just got in from my day at the salt mine. When I used it today for the first time I just put the whole newspaper on the table and rested my left hand on it while I lightly stropped with my right. I will try and be more organized with it next time and wrap some around a stone or something.
I've heard that The Washington Times is more abrasive then the NY Times or the Washington Post but I can't speak from experience. Sounds reasonable to me though. ;)
